With July just behind us the National Weather Service confirms what you probably already knew: It was really seriously totally sweatily hot over the majority of the United States. A surreal scientific blunder last week raised a huge question mark about the temperature records that underpin the worldwide alarm over global warming. On Monday, Nasa’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), which is run by Al Gore’s chief scientific ally, Dr James Hansen, and is one of four bodies responsible for monitoring global temperatures, announced that last month was the hottest October on record.

As the icecaps melt, polar bears are having problems. They’ve now got to swim further than they ever have to hunt for food, which can tire out the suckers long before they find an ice sheet to rest on. A Swedish design group called ADDI thinks it’s about time people did something to help the poor guys, proposing a polar bear lifejacket.
