More Americans working part-time as hours shrink and shift

There have always been part-time workers, especially at restaurants and retailers but employers today rely on them far more than before.

 The Fresh & Easy grocery store chain has opened up 150 stores in California since it was founded five years ago.  It has positioned itself as a hip and socially responsible company.

Toughest competition unemployed face is the underemployed

There are 8.8 million part time workers wanting full time jobs.

The unemployment rate in the U.S. is 9.1 percent but the job market is actually worse than that.  The 14 million unemployed in the U.S. aren’t just competing with each other they are also competing with the 8.8 million people that are part-timers who want full-time work.

Economy Adds Jobs but the Kind of Jobs Created is Less Encouraging

New jobs that are being created pay less and offer fewer work hours than the ones they have replaced.

When it comes to jobs, it’s not just quantity that matters–it’s also quality. It’s great news that the economy is finally producing jobs again–even if it’ll take another few years of this kind of growth to get us back to where we were before the Great Recession. But that also means it’s now time to ask what kind of jobs are being created. And on that front, things are a lot less encouraging.
