OpenRemote – software that ties the Internet of Things together

OpenRemote is an open-source Internet of Things platform.

If you were to buy several Internet-connected home gadgets—say, a “smart” thermostat, “smart” door lock, and “smart” window blinds—you would likely have to control each one with a separate app, meaning it exists on its own. But, that’s not how Elier Ramirez does it. In his home, an iPad app controls his lights, ceiling fans, and TV and stereo. Pressing a single button within the app can shut off all his lights and gadgets when he leaves.

WatsonPaths: New project let IBM’s Watson work with doctors

On the TV quiz show, Jeopardy!, IBM’s Watson defeated two grand-champions.  Watson is the world’s smartest computer and it was matched up against two really smart humans. The quiz-show win captured peoples’ attention, but, these days, as we identify uses for Watson throughout society, it’s becoming clear that these technologies will be used primarily to augment human intelligence, not compete with people or replace us.

Cloud to dominate data center traffic in 2013: Study

More than two-thirds of global data center traffic will be represented by cloud-based traffic by 2017.  Cloud traffic will have grown more than fourfold from 2012 to 2017. Cloud-based traffic is already poised comprise the majority of traffic within the next few months.

Amaze project to take 3D printing ‘into metal age’

The European Space Agency has unveiled plans to “take 3D printing into the metal age.”  They will be building parts for jets, spacecraft and fusion projects.  The Amaze project brings together 28 institutions to develop new metal components which are lighter, stronger and cheaper than conventional parts.

Solar power is a great way to keep robots running indefinitely, in theory. And it’s absolutely possible to do it, provided your robot doesn’t need to do anything urgently, you have a ludicrously powerful light source, or your robot is very efficient and spends a lot of time in the sun. That last category has potential for solar powered micro air vehicles, including the University of Maryland’s Robo Raven, which has just gotten kitted out with solar panel wings.

We are moving from a world in which physical products are separate to one in which they are connected.  Computers were just the beginning.  Appliances and engines now send alerts when they need to be serviced.  Cameras upload their photos automatically.  Vending machines trigger their own restocking.  Crops feed and water themselves.

Researchers create world’s fastest wireless network that hits 100 gigabits per second

Fraunhofer’s Millilink chip, with III-V transistors capable of switching at 300GHz.

Researchers in Germany have combined photonics and electronics to create a world-record-breaking wireless network that can send and receive data at a heady 100 gigabits per second (Gbps). This beats the same team’s previous world record of 40Gbps. At 100Gbps, or a transfer rate of 12.5 gigabytes per second — ten times faster than Google Fiber — you could copy a complete Blu-ray disc in a couple of seconds.

Consumers trust tech companies over carmakers for self-driving cars

Google might want to partner its technology with auto manufacturers rather than making and selling the cars itself.

Almost all the world’s automotive manufacturers are scrambling to develop self-driving cars. But, it appears, the world would rather buy a self-driving car made by a tech company. Consumers are more likely to splurge on a self-driving car made by Mercedes-Benz than Nissan; they’re even likelier to buy one made by the likes of Google and Apple, according to a study released by audit and advisory firm KPMG on Oct. 10.
