Internet’s core getting bigger and faster to meet global bandwidth demand

The growing popularity of video streaming and the emergence of more and more connected devices means that our need for bandwidth is going to grow.

Thanks to a slew of new technologies, optical networks are getting bigger, beefier and faster. It has now become commonplace to hear about optical networks, mostly in the Internet’s backbone, supporting speeds of 100 gigabits per second (Gbps). And to add some context, in 1990 the state of the art was 2.5 Gbps.

Search Engines for the Physical World: The Future of Search Technology in an Increasingly Transparent World

Futurist Thomas Frey: Consider the following scenario.

In 2035 a heinous criminal escapes in the city of Dallas, Texas and the local police department acquires a court order to conduct a thorough search of the metro area. Within 15 minutes a fleet of twelve surveillance drones is deployed to begin an ultra high-res flyover.

Chief Transformation Officer is the new CTO

The new CTO  – Chief Transformation Officer.

IT leaders today have known about the exponential growth of processing power, storage, and bandwidth, but they didn’t notice the the changes that have been happening over so many decades. These three change accelerators are what lie behind today’s avalanche of business transformation, and they are directly affecting the roles of CIO and CTO.

High-speed digital camera can capture objects traveling at 7,500 mph

Shotgun pellets traveling at 790 mph.

Researchers at the California company, MetroLaser, specializing in high-speed imaging equipment have developed a camera add-on capable of freezing objects traveling at up to 7,500 miles per hour — that’s almost 10 times the speed of sound.

Researchers levitate nanoscale diamonds with a laser beam

University of Rochester researchers recently demonstrated how beams of light can actually levitate nanoscale diamonds. And while they’re not actually suggesting that we construct a light-driven hoverboard made of the precious gems, the things we might be able to do with floating diamonds are pretty cool in their own right.

Elon Musk reveals plan for the Hyperloop

Hyperloop

Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX and Tesla announced about a year ago his idea of a “fifth mode of transportation” called the Hyperloop. Since then the founder he has been constantly peppered with questions about how the system works and when he might reveal his plan for such an invention. Musk has finally revealed his plan for the Hyperloop, complete with illustrations, technical explanations, financial hurdles, and even a potential first route. (Pics)

Spiri: A programmable quadcopter lets developers focus on building airborne apps

Spiri is a programmable quadcopter that’s been designed as a platform for airborne app creation. It’s also autonomous, meaning you don’t have to have mad piloting skills yourself just to test whether your neighbor spy app works. And even if your neighbor gets annoyed and throws a rock at it, Spiri can take a few knocks (thanks to reinforced carbon fiber ribbon protecting its body/blades).
