Ownership of e-readers is exploding.

E-reader ownership is exploding, according to a survey by Pew Internet Research. Ownership of e-readers such as the Amazon Kindle and Barnes & Noble Nook has grown from 6% to 12% of U.S. adults over the last six months. E-readers are more popular than tablets devices such as the iPad or various Android slates like the Samsung Galaxy Tab which are owned by 8% of U.S. adults.

Cable boxes are the single largest nonstop power drain in American homes

There are 160 million set-top boxes in the United States.

That cable box that sits on top of your television and ushers in cable signals and digital recording capacity into tv has become the single largest electricity drain in many American homes.  Some typical home entertainment configurations eat more power than a new refrigerator and even some central air-conditioning systems.

China opens more spy schools as it steps up intelligence operation

China opens National Intelligence College on the campus of Hunan University.

China opened its eighth National Intelligence College on the campus of Hunan University in the central city of Changsha last week. Since January, similar training schools have opened inside universities in Beijing, Shanghai, Xian, Qingdao and Harbin.

Addictive internet use rewires the brain: study

Researchers discovered several small regions in online addicts’ brains shrunk.

There are more internet and gaming addicts in China than in any other country. China  also conducts more research on the issue than anyone. Chinese researchers think that excessive gaming and internet use can permanently alter brain function, according to a new study.

Russia’s biggest retail bank has invented an ATM machine with a built-in lie detector in order to curb the growing menace of consumer credit fraud. The ATM can easily pass off as a part of KGB’s ultra- modern and secretive operational tool. Other than the rather unusual inclusion of a passport scanner, fingerprint recorder and a 3-dimensional facial recognition, the machine is equipped with advanced voice-analysis software.

Road trains are the future of hands-free driving

 Vehicle platoons (aka “road trains”) will allow software-equipped cars to automatically follow a professional driver in a “lead car”.

There will be platoons of vehicles lead by a professional driver that will let you take your eyes off the road and save fuel before cars are driven fully by computers.  By 2020 they will be on the road in Europe. (video)
