Designer Drug Abuse Out of Control in Many Regions of the World

The problem of so-called “designer drugs” is running out of control in many regions of the world, the U.N. global drugs watchdog said Wednesday.  The International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) said detailed instructions for how to make designer drugs, which are slightly altered to bypass existing control systems, are often shared via the Internet.

Economic uncertainty, unstable prices and simple math have given Americans less incentive to buy.

Meredith Carr and Vince Melamed of Brentwood are just the sort of couple real estate agents have always counted on to buy a home.  Melamed is a successful keyboardist and songwriter who wrote hits including Trisha Yearwood’s “Walkaway Joe,” and Carr is a freelance editor. They owned a home in Nashville, but when they moved to Los Angeles last year they decided they did not want to tie up their money in real estate, or be on the hook for home repairs and upkeep.

Tennessee College Bucks the Trend by Lowering Tuition

Sewanee, a Tennessee liberal arts college.

For those who wonder how college tuition costs manage to keep rising year after year, apparently defying laws of economic gravity, Sewanee, a liberal arts college in Tennessee, has an answer: they can’t.  On Wednesday, Sewanee announced that it will cut its $46,000 annual bill for students by 10 percent in the fall.

Number of Smoke-free Hotels is Growing

More than 12,900 lodgings serving the public in the USA are now smoke-free throughout.

Hotels, motels and other lodgings are following the trend of airlines and passenger-train operators by banning smoking throughout their premises. Some are doing it voluntarily, as public awareness about the health dangers of secondhand smoke grows. Others are being forced by a growing number of state and local laws.

Smokers now face another risk from their habit: it could cost them a shot at a job.  More hospitals and medical businesses in many states are adopting strict policies that make smoking a reason to turn away job applicants, saying they want to increase worker productivity, reduce health care costs and encourage healthier living.

More Americans Are Deciding to be Buried with Their Pets
