The average sticker price and average net price for tuition and fees at public and private colleges in the U.S. over the past 15 years.

There are two ways to think about college tuition price:

Sticker price is the full price colleges list in their brochures and on their websites.
Net price is the price students actually pay. Net price accounts for the fact that many students receive grants or scholarships. So it can be considerably lower than sticker price.

The lines represent the price in a given year, as a percent of the price in 1985.

This graph from the New York Times shows how much tuition has gone up, way more than other costs. College tuition and fees today are 559 percent of their cost in 1985. In other words, they have nearly sextupled (while consumer prices have roughly doubled)…

Default rates jump sharply on student loans

The national two-year default rate rose to 8.8 percent last year.

The number of borrowers defaulting on federal student loans has risen sharply. That number is an indication that rising college tuition costs, low graduation rates and poor job prospects are getting more and more students over their heads in debt.

Higher Education Reforms in England Will Triple Fees in 2012

Two thirds of universities will charge the highest possible tuition fee.

The Coalition’s policy on tuition fees risked descending into chaos after it emerged that two thirds of universities would charge the maximum £9,000 a year for degree courses. Ministers were accused of “losing control” of their flagship higher education reforms as growing numbers of vice-chancellors unveiled plans to almost triple fees in 2012.

Tennessee College Bucks the Trend by Lowering Tuition

On Wednesday, Sewanee announced that it will cut its $46,000 annual bill for students by 10 percent in the fall.
