QinetiQ North America (QNA), a defense technology company has launched a ten-pound tyke of a robot that can operate in hostile military environments, doing reconnaissance before fighters come in. The DR10 robot is designed as a lightweight offshoot of the company’s Dragon Runner military robots. The new DR Lite edition is intended specifically for supporting small military units and first responders.

Amazon Instant Video reaches 100,000 on-demand titles

Amazon grows again.

Amazon is constantly growing and expanding its catalog of videos available for on-demand streaming. The service just reached the 100k mark with 9,000 of those available under the Prime streaming plan. The bulk of the library is set aside for à la carte renting and buying with TV titles starting at $.99 cent and movies for $3.99. With deep living room penetration, all Amazon needs to do is flip the switch, offer a reasonably-priced subscription plan open to all titles, and effectively shut down Netflix…

World’s fastest running two-legged robot

MABEL is a robot in a University of Michigan lab can run like a human.  That is  a feat that represents the height of agility and efficiency for a two-legged machine. MABEL is believed to be the world’s fastest bipedal robot with knees with a peak pace of 6.8 miles per hour.

Despite the danger and the efforts by authorities in Jakarta to halt the craze, Indonesians with illnesses have been lying down across railway lines in the mistaken belief that a low-voltage electric current in the tracks will cure them as it passes through their bodies. (pics and video)

Researchers create robot that can learn, think and act by itself

At the Tokyo Institute of Technology researchers with the Hasegawa Group have created a robot that is capable of applying learned concepts to perform new tasks. The Self-Organizing Incremental Neural Network (SOINN) uses a type of self-replicating neural technology.  The research team has released a video demonstrating the robot’s ability to understand it’s environment and to carry out instructions that it previously didn’t know how to do.
