Is this the shape of the future?

If you happen to be curious about what the future home of your grandchildren might look like, take a glance at Remistudio’s concept hotel called The Ark. Russian architect, Alexander Remizov, is the mastermind behind the project, he believes that his floating “slinky,” which can hold up to 10,000 people can have multiple uses, including a safe house for disaster relief. The prototype’s main materials are timber, steel ,and high-strength ETFE plastic and it is built to handle land and/or water…

Bottled water contributing to rising rates of tooth decay in young children

bottled water

About 45 percent of parents give their children bottled water instead of tap water.

Amy Wilson was shocked when the dentist had to fill six cavities in her 4-year-old son’s baby teeth.  The New York Cit y mother of three scanned her family’s habits, trying to figure how Seamus, now 7, could have developed such tooth decay so early.

U.S. Army develops sandwich that stays fresh for 2 years

The Two-Year Sandwich

The military’s Meal Ready to Eat (M.R.E.), or those freeze-dried packages full of gummy pastes and freeze dried dreck that soldiers carry into the field is getting a much-needed upgrade.  It’s not better tasting dehydrated foods or better freeze-drying technology. Rather, the U.S. Army has developed the world’s most cutting edge sandwich, one that can be served fresh after sitting on the shelf for two full years.

NASA plans first space washing machine that could microwave laundry

A space laundry machine designed by UMPQUA (left) and Astronaut Buzz Aldrin walks on the surface of the Moon (right).

What  if you could put dirty clothes into a washing machine, leave, and only coming back once the freshly cleaned clothes have been dried out by microwaves.  That out-of-this-world-laundry concept could someday become a reality for astronauts and space explorers headed for the moon, asteroids or Mars.

NASA discovers there may be flowing water on Mars

water on mars

Dark seasonal streaks on crater walls could be flows of salty water.

We have known for a while now that ice exists on Mars.  We have seen a lot of suggestions that liquid water may have once existed on the surface in huge rivers and oceans. But  NASA has announced for the first time, they may have actually spotted some flowing, liquid water.

Firefighters in the Future Could Fight Fires with Flame-Bending Electricity

fire

Firefighters could someday snuff out flames by zapping them with pulses of electric current.

In some respects, firefighting technology has come a long way over the past several decades–we now have flame suppressing foams and powders for instance, as well as new ways of delivering them to the fire. But fundamentally, we’re still fighting fires the old fashioned way: point hose/bucket/ pressurized container and drench. But a team of Harvard researchers envisions a day when firefighters will snuff out flames not with a physical suppressant but with a blast of electric current.

Amazing Photo of a Frog Riding on a Snake to Escape the Floods in Australia

Frog rides a snake to escape flood.

Sure, they’ve had their differences in the past, but when times are tough even frogs and snakes can share in a little cold-blooded solidarity. Amid the devastating floods in Queensland, Australia, computer technician Armin Gerlach spotted an unusual sight — a frog riding atop the surface of the water on the back of a snake as the pair sought out solid ground. It’s hard not to be inspired by the cooperative duo, particularly considering that snakes are quite fond of eating frogs, and vice versa.
