Martin Aircraft claims it will have a jetpack ready for sale starting next year. NPR talked with Martin Aircraft CEO Peter Coker to get the details on the jetpack, which is expected to fly as high as 8,000 feet and hit ground speeds of 35 miles per hour. Unfortunately, it’s a bit big to call a pack and it’s not technically a jet, but let’s not bother ourselves with semantics when the future is at our doorstep. (Video)

Internet’s core getting bigger and faster to meet global bandwidth demand

The growing popularity of video streaming and the emergence of more and more connected devices means that our need for bandwidth is going to grow.

Thanks to a slew of new technologies, optical networks are getting bigger, beefier and faster. It has now become commonplace to hear about optical networks, mostly in the Internet’s backbone, supporting speeds of 100 gigabits per second (Gbps). One in five American deaths linked to obesity, three times higher than previous estimates

Younger generations have been exposed longer to risk factors for obesity.

A new report reveals that the number of deaths caused by obesity in the United States has been vastly underestimated by researchers. Obesity accounts for 18 percent of deaths among black and white Americans between the ages of 40 and 85, according to the study published online Aug. 15 in the American Journal of Public Health. Previous estimates had placed obesity-related deaths at only 5 percent of all U.S. deaths.
