Nanosize batteries could revolutionize green energy

nano battery

The latest breakthrough in the search for lighter, more potent batteries is small battery made up of a billion nanopores, or microscopic holes capable of producing electric current.

Nanosize batteries that are 80,000 times thinner than a human hair could revolutionize green energy. They could advance the use of electric vehicles, now limited by short driving ranges, and of renewable energy, which needs storage for times when the wind doesn’t blow or the sun doesn’t shine.

Why we need radical change in the disease-model of mental health

conversation with a therapist

It is difficult reliably to distinguish different “disorders.”

By Peter Kinderman: The idea that our more distressing emotions such as grief and anger can best be understood as symptoms of physical illnesses is pervasive and seductive. But in my view it is also a myth, and a harmful one. Our present approach to helping vulnerable people in acute emotional distress is severely hampered by old-fashioned, inhumane and fundamentally unscientific ideas about the nature and origins of mental health problems. We need wholesale and radical change, not only in how we understand mental health problems, but also in how we design and commission mental health services.

Exposure to environmental factor linked to huge rise in ADHD: Study

Sticking out tongue

Exposure to a component of air pollution increases the chances of children developing ADHD by five times.

A link between rising air pollution in urban areas and the rapid increase in diagnosis in ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) has been discovered in a new study.

SeaOrbiter – a spaceship-like floating lab that could be exploring our oceans by 2016

Sea_Orbiter 1

SeaOrbiter

Surprisingly, we know little about Earth’s oceans despite covering more than 70% of our planet’s surface. With more than 95% of the world’s underwater realm unexplored, scientists know more about the surface of the Moon and Mars than the bottom of the ocean. Due to intense pressures and poor visibility, the deep ocean is an extremely challenging place to study. But that could be set to change in the not too distant future, thanks to a pioneering architect’s ambitious project which will see a $50 million floating laboratory take to the seas.

Data deluge will disrupt medicine within this decade

exponential-medicine

Health and medicine will undergo a greater transformation than any other industry or field in the next decade.

At this year’s Exponential Medicine 2014, the overriding theme for the event was information. In his opening talk, Peter Diamandis said health and medicine are poised to undergo a greater transformation than any other industry or field in the next decade. Of course, he meant treatments and technology will meaningfully advance. But more than that, it is the liberation of data that will make care more targeted, proactive, and effective.

The big 5 internet companies doubling in three years on a trillion dollar base

big 5

By John Batelle: From time to time I have tracked what I call the “Internet Big Five” – the key platform technology companies that are driving the Internet economy. Nearly three years ago I wrote the first of this series – The Internet Big Five. I identified Apple, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Facebook as the “big five,” and compared their relative strengths in financials, consumer reach, and technology strengths. Some of the metrics were admittedly subjective – ranking relative offerings in “engagement” and “data,” for example.

81% of Tor users can be de-anonymized by analyzing router information: Study

tor 1

More than 81% of Tor clients can be ‘de-anonymized’ – their originating IP addresses revealed – by exploiting the ‘Netflow’ technology that Cisco has built into its router protocols, and similar traffic analysis software running by default in the hardware of other manufacturers, according to research undertaken between 2008 and 2014.

ComfortWay – Smart iPhone case that offers all-day data roaming for just $2

ComfortWay

If you travel a lot internationally you more than likely have been stung by roaming Internet charges at some point or another. It’s possible to buy or rent a local SIM card when you’re abroad but this requires that your iPhone be either unlocked or jailbroken — and also limits users to just one mobile carrier in each country. Graphene-based supercapacitors will make battery-free electric cars possible

electric car

Another immediate benefit of the supercapacitor film technology is in charging time.

Researchers at Rice University and the Queensland University of Technology have conducted a study that has resulted in the creation of a graphene-based supercapacitor film that could possibly replace the need for a conventional battery in electric cars.
