IQ scores reflect motivation as well as intelligence.

A new study suggests that if you want to improve your child’s chances of getting into Mensa then bribe them during their IQ test.  Offering a financial reward for doing well on an IQ test can increase their score by up to 20 points on the scale where the average is 100 and Mensa membership is around 150, according to scientists.

RIP Typewiter

Joining other discarded technologies of late, including the Flip video camera, Kodachrome, and the humble floppy disk is the typewriter, which will no longer be produced anywhere in the world.

The last company on earth to produce the typewriter — Godrej and Boyce — has shut down its production plant in Mumbai, India, according to reports that, fittingly, are making the rounds via the Internet…

southofengland.png

Apple has been tracking your moves and invading your privacy.

Bloomberg was first to report today that two iPad/iPhone users have filed a class action lawsuit accusing Apple of invasion of privacy and computer fraud, and of “secretly recording movements of iPhone and iPad users.”

Vikram Ajjampur, an iPhone user in Florida, and William Devito, a New York iPad customer, sued April 22 in federal court in Tampa, Florida, seeking a judge’s order barring the alleged data collection.

What makes the smart grid more efficient?

The smart grid is a complicated beast. While the concept is simple enough — make the energy grid intelligent so that we use electricity in the most efficient manner possible — the implementation is mind-numbingly intricate. That’s why progress is steady but slow, from developing technology to standards to systems. GigaOm has a new report detailing six areas that are important for the growth of the new grid, including improvements in home energy management, carbon management and electric vehicle technologies.

Futurist Thomas Frey:  I looked over at my clock and saw that it was 3:19 am, a time when most people would normally just roll over and fall back to sleep, but I was wide awake. And from past experience, I wouldn’t get tired again for 2-3 hours, so this was one of those crazy middle-of-the-night periods of free time where I could get something done, and my body didn’t really know I was awake.
