Everything Will be Powered by the Sun in the Future

solar_reactor

The ETH-Caltech solar fuel reactor uses concentrated heat from the sun to create fuel from water and carbon dioxide.

New scheme would use only sunlight, air and water to supply energy for cars, laptops, GPS systems.  “At the California Institute of Technology, they’re developing a way to turn sunlight and water into fuel for our cars.”–President Barack Obama, Jan. 25, 2011.

Training Sharks to Eat Lionfish

sharks-eating-lionfish-500x303

Lionfish need predators to balance out their ecosystem.

Lionfish are pretty, but they belong in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. They lack natural predators in the Caribbean, so lionfish have become quite the invasive species since they escaped from aquariums ten years ago to breed in the waters off the US and Central America. In Honduras, divers are not only hunting them, they are also training sharks to eat the lionfish!

Freeway Air Pollution May Cause Brain Damage

car_fuel_air_pollution 2345

Brains are affected by air pollution.

The air pollution that results from the millions of cars and trucks that crowd our highways is ugly stuff — there’s no doubt that the particulate matter it’s laced with causes respiratory illness, heart disease, cancer, and other devastating health effects. As bad as that is, we still might not be properly grasping the extent of the danger air pollution presents — researchers at USC have now linked freeway air pollution to increased brain damage in mice. And they’re concerned humans might suffer similarly.

Chemical Discovered Which ‘Makes Bone Marrow Repair Skin’

skin graft 234

Skin grafts trigger repair by bone marrow cells.

The chemical which summons stem cells from bone marrow to the site of a wound has been discovered by scientists in the UK and Japan.

The study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, identified the distress signal – HMGB1.

The authors believe it can be used to put “a megaphone in the system” to improve the treatment of injuries such as burns and leg ulcers…

Jobs Are Back Just Not For the Middle-Aged Worker

why-the-middle-aged-are-missing-out-on-new-jobs

Jobs are back. Just not for everybody.

Like many other things in the stutter-step economic recovery, the job market is finally recovering, but progress is uneven and some people are being left out. The latest jobs report, for example, shows that the economy created 216,000 jobs in March, for a total of about 1.9 million new jobs since employment levels bottomed out at the end of 2009. That’s a healthy pace of job growth that will help bring down the uncomfortably high unemployment rate, and, with luck, cement the recovery.

NASA Makes Longer, Straighter Piezoelectric Nanowires in Microgravity

nasa-piezoelecric-nanowire-researchers

Microgravity provides nano solutions.

Piezoelectric nanowires are the stuff that make power-generating pants a possibility, and that prodigious potential has drawn the attention of NASA. You see, self-powered spacesuits are awfully attractive to our nation’s space agency, and a few of its finest student researchers have discovered that the current-creating strands of zinc oxide can be made longer and straighter — and therefore more powerful — when freed from gravity’s unrelenting pull. That means nanowires grown in microgravity could lead to higher capacity batteries and the aforementioned juice-generating interstellar garb…

Jellyfish Lake – Daily Migration Of Millions

jefilake 2345

Quite a curious collection of jellyfish

Every day, millions of golden jellyfish migrate – no big surprise there. However, you might not expect them to migrate horizontally across a lake. Still, a visit to Jellyfish Lake on Eil Malk, an island in Palau, in the Pacific Ocean, will confirm just that. Yet just how on Earth did these jellyfish get to the lake in the first place?
