Will Amazon’s push for same-day delivery destroy local retail?

Amazon has had an unbeatable price advantage over its physical rivals. When you buy anything from your local retailer the company is required to collect local sales tax at the checkout. In most states, Amazon is exempt from that rule. According to a 1992 Supreme Court ruling, only firms with a physical presence in a state are required to collect taxes from residents. For example, if you live in California and buy a product on Amazon you are supposed to pay a $100 “use tax” when you file your annual return in that state. But nobody does that. For most people, then, most items at Amazon are significantly cheaper than the same, identically priced items at other stores.

Yesterday there were Two small pieces of news that could make for a big headache for TV.
After DirecTV and Viiacon failed to agree on subscriber fees, Viacom yanked its 19 channels — including Nickelodeon, MTV and Comedy Central — from DirecTV. And the second piece of news is a federal judge cleared the way for Aereo, an exciting new startup that could bring local TV (NBC, ABC, CBS, PBS) to any device you wish, from a smart phone to an actual TV.

Majority of businesses and customers say they know little about new mobile technologies.
Mobile payment systems have the potential to provide significant benefits to business travelers, as well as travel managers. New technologies such as mobile wallets, near-field communication (NFC), along with a proliferation of travel apps, can streamline both the purchase and expensing process for business travelers. But customers’ and businesses’ lack of familiarity with these new tools remains a significant stumbling block for adoption.

Pinterest traffic beats Google referral, Bing, Twitter and StumbleUpon
Pinterest is now beating out Twitter, StumbleUpon, Bing, and Google in referral traffic (not Google organic, of course) according to new data just released by the online sharing service Shareaholic. The study is based on Shareoholic’s network of over 200,000 publishers, which reaches more than 270 million people monthly.

Young tablet users more willing to pay for online news
People who pay for online news are still the minority – but participation may be growing thanks to tablet computers.
According to the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism’s new Digital News Report 2012 those who have paid for digital news ranges from 12 percent in Denmark to four percent in the UK. And only six percent of survey respondents said they would be willing, in future, to pay for news from sources they liked.

U.S. backs copyright “limitations”
The US government learns that copyright maximalism won’t work as ACTA withers.
In San Diego last week, another negotiating round began for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement. To the amazement of everyone, the US Trade Representative (USTR) announced on July 3 it would now include a provision in the intellectual property (IP) chapter recognizing the importance of “limitations and exceptions” to copyright and embracing the international 3-part test for what constitutes suitable limitations and exceptions. (For those not familiar with this term of art, “limitations and exceptions” are things like Fair Use and First Sale Doctrine in the United States. As the name implies, limitations and exceptions to copyright limit the rights of the copyright holder and create exceptions to the general rule against copying without permission.)
