Sugar and High Fructose Corn Syrup The Same Thing? No? It’s about the lesser of two evils, isn’t it?
But when push comes to shove, how different is sugar from high fructose corn syrup (HFCS)?

The Western Sugar Cooperative is claiming that the two are in fact very different. It recently filed suit against sugar refiners for misleading consumers in calling HFCS corn sugar, according to the Des Moines Register and as discussed on Food Politics. “The lawsuit names as defendants Archer Daniels Midland Co., Cargill Inc., and other major corn syrup processors as well as the Corn Refiners Association.”

So, is it fair to call HFCS sugar? Not according to the Western Sugar Cooperative…

FTC Proposes Stricter Guidelines on Food Ads for Children

Regulators are asking food makers and restaurant companies to make a choice: make your products healthier or stop advertising them to youngsters.

The Federal Trade Commission has proposed sweeping new guidelines that could push the food industry to overhaul how it advertises cereal, soda pop, snacks, restaurant meals and other foods to children.

PepsiCo Introduces ‘Social Vending’ Machine Technology

Prenatal Exposure to Pesticides Leads to Diminished IQ’s in Children

The study found some of the risks that pesticides were already known to pose to children, including ADHD and learning difficulties.

It was reported this week by the Environmental Working Group that three studies published simultaneously all came to the same eye-opening conclusion.  The conclusion was prenatal exposure to organophosphate pesticides leads to diminished IQs in children between the ages of 6 and 9.

151 Materials in Food or Feed Have Been Blacklisted by China

China is waging a prolonged and stringent fight against the illegal use of additives in food.

151 materials forbidden or abusable in food and feed over the past nine years have been blacklisted by China, according to figures released by the food safety committee under the State Council, or China’s Cabinet.

Chocolate Compound Beats Codeine for Cough-Suppression

Chocolate to help a cough?

A compound found in chocolate outperforms over-the-counter and codeine-based cough-suppressants in clinical trials. The compound, theobromine, was written up in the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology Journal following a small placebo-controlled study at Imperial College London. Our GP told us that the best thing for a cough was a spoonful of honey, and it’s pretty much all we use around our house (well, that and the vile, repulsive, disgusting, incredibly effective Buckley’s Mixture — but that’s a last resort).

The Taste Test – Expensive and Inexpensive Wines Taste the Same

The Taste Test

University of Hertfordshire Psychologist Prof Richard Wiseman has revealed the results of The Taste Test.  The Taste Test is a large-scale experiment to discover whether expensive wines are good value for money. The experiment involved over 400 members of the public tasting either an expensive or inexpensive wine.   Then they tried to tell which was which.  The experiment was carried out as part of the Edinburgh International Science Festival.

High levels of bacteria in meat commonly found on grocery store shelves have been found by researchers.  According to a study released on Friday, more than half of the bacteria is resistant to multiple types of antibiotics.
