Scientists create blackest silicon solar cell.

Scientists at Natcore Technology have created a black silicon solar cell with an average reflectance of 0.3%, making it the “blackest” solar cell ever designed. Natcore’s development offers a tenfold decrease in reflectance over the solar spectrum. The result is an increase in energy efficiency that could help solar power compete even more effectively with traditional fossil fuels.

Dual-Action wind turbine generates power and water

eolewater turbine 3214123

Wind can create both power and water?

Throughout the developing world, millions of people struggle with a shortage of clean water and steady electricity. This wind turbine could solve both problems in one shot by pulling both power and water straight from the wind.

The WMS1000 Wind Turbine was invented by Marc Parent and is built by the French start-up Eole Water. Sitting atop a 24-meter mast, the machine generates electricity with a conventional 30kW direct-drive turbine in a 12-ton nacelle with a 13-meter blade diameter. The WMS1000 can self-regulate the energy it produces, allowing it to provide a steady stream of power even in gusty or choppy winds. Installing an array of the turbines, which each have a service life of 30 years, creates a small-scale, decentralized power grid perfect for remote areas…

Where were you hundreds of Birthdays and Christmases ago tape scissors?

tape scissors 242342

The obvious evolution.

It’s obvious why these brilliant scissors with a built-in tape dispenser aren’t available in every office supply store in the country. They want you to have to buy both products separately—increasing the store’s profits while you sit at home fumbling your way through another botched attempt at wrapping gifts…

Solowheel – self-balancing electric unicycle

These one-wheeled, self-balancing personal transport solutions, the fat wheeled eniCycle, the stylish and graceful U3 from Honda or the slightly scary prospect of the UnoMoto, have all shared more in common. They’ve all had somewhere for the user to sit. Inventist’s Solowheel is a little different – you ride this electric unicycle standing upright, like a Segway or skateboard. It has a useful carry handle and fold-away foot platforms, is gyro-stabilized and the Li-ion batteries offer a range of about 12 miles between charges. (Pics)

Blind man takes a trip in one Of Google’s self-driving cars

Google’s self-driving cars have absolutely nothing to do with Google’s core business, and Google has never even tried to explain how they’re going to make money.
But so what? They’re really cool. They push technology forward. And as this video shows, they could make people’s lives better in real, tangible ways…

Sony’s Authentication Power Outlet can recognize devices and users

sony smart plug

Sony’s Authenticated Power Outlet system currently consists of a plug and outlet that communicate wirelessly.

A power outlet that can identify devices plugged into it, as well as individuals using the plug has been developed by Sony. The company says such technology could allow the electricity usage of individual devices to be monitored so non-essential devices could be switched off remotely in the event of limited electricity supply, or for the billing of customers charging their electric vehicles or mobile devices in public places. Scrubba your clothes with this washing machine in a bag

Scrubba washer 234232

Scrubba washes where no others dare.

There’s always a trade-off when packing for extended trips—bring enough outfits to last the entire trip or bring fewer sets and hope you can find a local laundromat? Or, option three, bring the Scrubba wash bag along and do your own laundry.

The Scrubba is the brainchild of Ashley Newland, who devised the system while climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro…
