Countdown to the Big Event – The DaVinci Inventor Showcase on November 5th

Showcase Graphic 893

Deadline for Exhibiting at the DaVinci Inventor Showcase is Friday, Oct 28th

It all starts with an epiphany. Every invention begins with a single “eureka moment” or some “brilliant revelation” that causes the inventor to take action.

These epiphanies become the idea seeds planted by inventors around the world. But we can only wish the process was as simple as adding water and fertilizer and waiting for the ideas to spring to life.

Inventions are not just patents to be hung on a wall. They are the starting point for a new business enterprise. So, not only does the inventor have to figure out how to create a working product or device, they also have to drive it forward, creating a business model that will enable it to survive. And that’s where the DaVinci Institute comes in.

Bang! Lamp – You’ll shoot your light out, kid

Bang! Lamp

Bang! lamp by Bitplay is a pretty cool lighting accessory that lets you turn it on and off through a remote control that’s shaped like a gun. Pull the trigger, the light goes out and the lampshade actually tilts as if shot. It also works in reverse, though it doesn’t really make much sense that way. The gun is an IR controller and that dark band around the base of the lamp is the receiver. (Video)

Future of transportation – GM’s super-smart pod vehicle

EN-V

As GM gets ready to roll out its electric mini-car, the Chevy Spark, its concept electric vehicle, the Chevy EN-V, a two-seater that the automaker has developed was a-buzz at last year’s Shanghai World Expo. The EN-V could be an end to gridlock, an end to accidents and n end to driving altogether. In fact you can conduct a video conference in traffic, and this podcar parks itself. This next-generation vehicle combines zero-transmission, super-connectivity and other advanced technologies to makes the future of individual transportation actually seem sustainable. (video)

Post-Employment Era: Humans need not apply

help wanted

Perhaps comedian Steven Wright said it best:

“I lost my job the other day. Well, I didn’t really lose it. I know where it’s at, it’s just when I go there someone else is doing it.”

They say that the truest comedy is the funniest, and there is nothing truer than the statement above. Steven’s old job didn’t go anywhere… his employer just found someone more qualified, more efficient, or less costly to do it. In today’s economy where layoffs and a bleak job market are the norm, the joke has lost a great deal of it’s humor. But a good look at the data proves Steven’s point — all those jobs are still there, it’s just that employers are finding more qualified, more efficient, and more cost-effective help.

‘Sticky boom’ – a sticky solution for grabbing objects in space

For one spacecraft to grab onto another spacecraft in space is a very challenging task. Although the robotic arms on the space shuttles and International Space Station (ISS) have made it look easy over the years, the process requires complex manipulator arms and special fixtures on the objects the arms are grasping, limiting the technology’s use. A small startup company is testing a new approach, though, that could greatly expand the applications of robotic arm technology to include, for example, cleaning up orbital debris and servicing the ISS.

This fluid fly-by video shows astonishing view of Earth

This weekend NASA published an awesome time-lapse flyby of planet Earth taken from the International Space Station. Awesome, but jerky—until now. Someone interpolated the original frames to achieve this smooth as silk motion film. It’ll leave you stupefied…

Martin jetpack

A water-based jetpack isn’t exactly the most practical way to get to the office, but what about one that uses wind turbines to propel you across the city? That sounds a little more useful, which is why it is utterly awesome to hear that the Martin jetpack will be available in 2012. That’s the good news. (video)

Finally, YouTube will let you edit your videos online

If you upload your videos to YouTube—or most video sharing sites for that matter—there isn’t much you can do to improve them after the fact. Starting today, though, YouTube will finally provide basic tools to make your kitty videos suck less.

YouTube is rolling out the new feature in the form of a simple “Edit Video” button on your My Videos page. It’s a little like if they just took their cloud-based editor and sucked it back into the site…
