Nielsen Report: Streaming Increases while TV Ratings Falter

The latest report from Nielsen shows the growing change in how consumers are watching their favorite shows. Last quarter, the number of people watching traditional television dipped by 4-percent, but those watching shows through online streaming services skyrocketed by 60-percent. This is in comparison to the same quarter (Q3) last year, and it is anticipated the increase in streaming video adoption will impact traditional TV. This news comes shortly after Netflix’s CEO Reed Hastings predicted that traditional TV will be effectively dead by 2030.

81% of Tor users can be de-anonymized by analyzing router information: Study

More than 81% of Tor clients can be ‘de-anonymized’ – their originating IP addresses revealed – by exploiting the ‘Netflow’ technology that Cisco has built into its router protocols, and similar traffic analysis software running by default in the hardware of other manufacturers, according to research undertaken between 2008 and 2014.

The Internet of Things isn’t set to unleash a deluge of data… yet

The startup called Spark is building a microcontroller for connected devices.

Billions of devices, from forks to jet engines, are already connected to the internet. All signs point to a huge surge in the years to come. For example, Cisco, predicts 21 billion of them in 2018, up from 13 billion in 2013. But despite those numbers, the companies that will be storing all that device data are less concerned sheer volume and more concerned about making it usable.

Google to launch 180 low-orbit satellites that provide Internet access

The billion-dollar project will complement Google’s balloons and drones.

Google wants to deploy a fleet of satellites to extend internet access to areas around the world that do not have internet access. The fleet of satellites will cost Google $1 billion. Google “will start with 180 small, high-capacity satellites orbiting the earth at lower altitudes than traditional satellites, and then could expand.”
