Self-cleaning cloth keeps your shirts bacteria-free with pure sunlight power

Self cleaning cloth.

This is laundry science at work. Researchers at the University of California at Davis have developed a compound that blends into cotton clothes and, when exposed to sunlight, destroys bacteria and toxins.

The compound is known as 2-anthraquinone carboxylic acid, or 2-AQC, and can be incorporated into cotton threads without the risk of washing off. After an hour’s exposure to our yellow sun, the super compound produces reactive oxygen species, such as hydroxyl radicals and hydrogen peroxide, that break down nasties like E. coli and dangerous pesticides…

Energy storage membrane set to revolutionize rechargeable batteries

membrane-1-580x384

This simple looking membrane could change the industry.

If you want a rechargeable battery in a power-hungry device today, the only real choice is a lithium-ion battery. They are heavy, quite large depending on how much charge you need, and volatile. They also have a high cost and limited life span.

A replacement for lithium-ion has long been sought after, and recently there have been some breakthroughs such as the jelly-like polymer battery. However, researchers at the National University of Singapore may have come up with the best solution yet in the form of an new energy storage membrane…

Medi-Ring – customizable ring to identify prescription medication bottles

openingletter 005

Featured invention at the DaVinci Inventor Showcase 2011

MEDI-RING® was developed by a pharmacist to help eliminate errors when taking prescription medications at home. In 2008, nearly 1.9 million people were treated or hospitalized in the U.S. for illness and injuries related to taking medicines, a 54% increase in incidents over previous years. The growing number of such errors can be attributed to an increase in the number of medications being prescribed, and the fact that many pharmacy labels indicate dosages, but fail to identify specifically what the medication treats. Also, according to the National Community of Pharmacists Association, “as many as 75% of Americans admit they don’t take medications as directed.” MEDI-RING® is a user-friendly device that snaps onto prescription bottles presenting a space on which the patient may write what the medication controls, and any other information they feel is necessary to take the drug correctly.

NeverWet – revolutionary new product that repels liquids

Drops-001

NeverWet™ coatings are a featured product at the DaVinci Inventor Showcase 2011

NeverWet™ coatings are Superhydrophobic and Oleophobic. Water on NeverWet™ surfaces sits as an almost perfect sphere. Water beads “glide” over the surfaces like a skate gliding over ice, with almost no surface friction. Superhydrophobic surfaces such as the leaves of the lotus plant have surfaces that are highly hydrophobic, i.e., extremely difficult to wet.  “Oleophobic” (from the Greek (oleo) “oil”) refers to the physical property of a molecule that is repelled from oil.

Dean Kamen files patent application for an inflatable, illuminated wind turbine

inflatable-wind-turbine

Another new invention from Dean Kamen.

Inflatable wind turbines may not be an entirely new idea, but prolific inventor Dean Kamen has detailed one of a slightly different sort in a recently published patent application. In addition to generating energy for general use, the turbine would also be able to power a set of LEDs adorning the turbine itself, which could be used to display advertising or other information using a persistence of vision effect…

The revolutionary “Disappearing Car Door”

The disappearing car door is labelled a “revolutionary concept in car technology” by its creators Jatech. The disappearing car door is a spin on the convention car door employed in nearly all automobiles today. Instead of the outward swinging hinged doors we are all familiar with, they have developed a door that retracts down into the body of the vehicle. To see exactly what I’m talking about, check it out on their website. Jatech have fitted the disappearing doors to Lincoln sedans, but can do custom fittings to customer’s vehicles of choice.
