For one spacecraft to grab onto another spacecraft in space is a very challenging task. Although the robotic arms on the space shuttles and International Space Station (ISS) have made it look easy over the years, the process requires complex manipulator arms and special fixtures on the objects the arms are grasping, limiting the technology’s use. A small startup company is testing a new approach, though, that could greatly expand the applications of robotic arm technology to include, for example, cleaning up orbital debris and servicing the ISS.

QinetiQ introduces unmanned micro military robot

QinetiQ North America (QNA), a defense technology company has launched a ten-pound tyke of a robot that can operate in hostile military environments, doing reconnaissance before fighters come in. The DR10 robot is designed as a lightweight offshoot of the company’s Dragon Runner military robots. The new DR Lite edition is intended specifically for supporting small military units and first responders.

World’s fastest running two-legged robot

MABEL is a robot in a University of Michigan lab can run like a human.  That is  a feat that represents the height of agility and efficiency for a two-legged machine. MABEL is believed to be the world’s fastest bipedal robot with knees with a peak pace of 6.8 miles per hour.

Researchers create robot that can learn, think and act by itself

At the Tokyo Institute of Technology researchers with the Hasegawa Group have created a robot that is capable of applying learned concepts to perform new tasks. The Self-Organizing Incremental Neural Network (SOINN) uses a type of self-replicating neural technology.  The research team has released a video demonstrating the robot’s ability to understand it’s environment and to carry out instructions that it previously didn’t know how to do.

Scientists develop ‘electronic tongue’ to rival sommeliers in wine tasting

The ‘electronic tongue’ may have a commercial use and could eventually replace the teams of experts needed in each bodega.

Spanish scientists have developed an “electronic tongue” that promises to rival the work of the traditional sommelier and identify different grades of the Spanish sparkling wine, cava. The electronic device has been developed by the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB) and uses electronic sensory systems with “advanced mathematical procedures” to analyse different varieties of the Catalan alternative to champagne according to taste.

Foxconn to replace hard-working people with 1 million robots

There are 10,000 robots at the factory now and that number will increase by 300,000 next year.

Hard-working human maufacturers are about to be replaced by about 1 million robots at Foxconn. If you think about it that is a number that is a very telling comment on the current state of electronics manufacturing.
