Over Or Under?

Which way do you prefer?

There are two choices of toilet paper orientation when using a toilet roll holder with a horizontal axle parallel to the wall: the toilet paper may hang over or under the roll. USDA Outsources Biotech Crop Evaluation to the GMO Industry

usda-logo-1 56789

What kind of logic prevails when environmental impact statements
on biotech crops
are outsourced to the GMO industry itself?

The U.S. is already cultivating 165 million acres of genetically modified crops, up 7 million acres from just two years ago. Modified seeds and large monocultures in general, are monopolizing our nation’s agriculture system like never before and crop after crop are deemed “safe” by the USDA. We’re headed full speed down a dark, winding road and it seems we’re driving blindfolded. And most recently, according to a story on Grist, the USDA is starting a new program which will outsource environmental impact statements on biotech crops to the GMO industry. Obviously, biotech companies are thrilled with the idea…

The smart grid is a complicated beast. While the concept is simple enough — make the energy grid intelligent so that we use electricity in the most efficient manner possible — the implementation is mind-numbingly intricate. That’s why progress is steady but slow, from developing technology to standards to systems. GigaOm has a new report detailing six areas that are important for the growth of the new grid, including improvements in home energy management, carbon management and electric vehicle technologies.

Futurist Thomas Frey:  I looked over at my clock and saw that it was 3:19 am, a time when most people would normally just roll over and fall back to sleep, but I was wide awake. And from past experience, I wouldn’t get tired again for 2-3 hours, so this was one of those crazy middle-of-the-night periods of free time where I could get something done, and my body didn’t really know I was awake.
