Listening for one Whale of a song.
Just like humans, whales also have “pop songs,” complete with music mania that sweeps across the ocean:
The findings are based on 11 years of recordings from underwater microphones slung over the sides of boats, which were collected by marine biologist Ellen Garland of the University of Queensland in Australia and colleagues. Picking out the patterns took a while; the team had to listen to 745 songs in total from six whale populations across the South Pacific over the 11-year period. The researchers identified 11 distinctly different styles (audio). Sometimes the “hit song” contained snippets from previous seasons, sometimes it was entirely revolutionary…

Ah, control + alt + delete. CTRL + ALT + DEL for short. On the Mac, it’s a little more complicated: Command + Option + The Media Eject Key. Still, they all do the same thing… they reboot your computer without yanking the cable out of the wall or hammering a physical button.
You probably never gave the actual provenance of Control + Alt + Delete much thought. Clearly, it’s a shortcut birthed by some coder or another in the early days of computer lore, but you probably assumed that the guy who actually invented Control + Alt + Delete had his name forgotten by history because ultimately no one cared…

An interplanetary spacecraft for a flight to Mars will be created not before 2025 and the maiden flight to the red planet will be possible only after 2035, said Russian space agency Roscosmos chief Anatoly Perminov on Wednesday.
“The possibility of a flight to Mars needs to be combined with the construction of a spaceship having a new nuclear power propulsion unit, which will make it possible to reach the planet in a month,” Perminov said in Russia’s upper house of parliament…

Drinking the popular mix of Vodka and Red Bull is riskier than drinking alcohol alone, according to a new study. Researchers found that while physical and mental impairment were no different with the combination, the feeling of intoxication was higher.
FlyNano
A radical new single-seat aircraft dubbed the FlyNano was unveiled at the Aero Friedrichshafen, Germany (April 13-16) byaviation consultant, flight designer and enthusiastic pilot Aki Suokas. You don’t even have to have a license to fly the single-seat fun flyer. It is made entirely of carbon fiber and weighs in at a mere 70kg. The FlyNano takes off and lands on water. The FlyNano falls under the weight of what is considered to be a plane so you don’t have to worry about applying for a flying license in most parts of the world. (Pics)

University of Hertfordshire Psychologist Prof Richard Wiseman has revealed the results of The Taste Test. The Taste Test is a large-scale experiment to discover whether expensive wines are good value for money. The experiment involved over 400 members of the public tasting either an expensive or inexpensive wine. Then they tried to tell which was which. The experiment was carried out as part of the Edinburgh International Science Festival.
