Study Shows Little Benefit of Bypass Surgery for Heart Failure

New research shows that survival rates are not better than those taking pills to fight risks from high blood pressure and cholesterol.

New research has cast doubt on the benefits of bypass surgery for many patients with very weak hearts. Doctors claim the operation did not improve survival rates for those already taking medicines to control risks like high cholesterol and blood pressure.

Six months after a heart attack 50% of patients eating at their favorite fast food restaurants.

It would seem logical for patients who have had a heart attack to cut back on fast food.  Some devoted fast food eaters do. A simple technique that involves squeezing the arm three times before surgery could speed up recovery from heart bypass operations and even improve patients’ long-term survival.  Using the same type of blood pressure device found in GPs’ surgeries, doctors squeeze the upper arm three times, for five minutes at a time, restricting blood flow to the heart.

Robotic System That Will Operate On A Beating Heart

Robotic System That Will Operate On A Beating Heart

This device lets surgeons attach small anchors to tissue inside a beating heart by compensating for the heart’s movement.

Fixing the heart is hard. Certain procedures have to be performed on a stationary organ, so the heart is stopped and the patient put on a cardiopulmonary bypass machine. But stopping the heart increases the risk of brain damage. Now researchers at Harvard University and Children’s Hospital Boston are testing a robotic system that could help surgeons perform a common valve repair while the heart beats on. The system uses 3-D ultrasound images to predict and compensate for the motion of the heart so that the surgeon can work on a patient’s mitral valve as it moves.
