Pew study on the global religious landscape

Eight in 1o people identify with a religious group.

More than eight-in-ten people identify with a religious group worldwide. A comprehensive demographic study of more than 230 countries and territories conducted by the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life estimates that there are 5.8 billion religiously affiliated adults and children around the globe, representing 84% of the 2010 world population of 6.9 billion.

Are we on the verge of a Holy War?

The latest bombing in Nigeria shows how Christians are increasingly suffering for their faith.

Can you imagine the unspeakable fury that would erupt across the Islamic world if a Christian-led government in Khartoum had been responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Sudanese Muslims over the past 30 years. Or if Christian gunmen were firebombing mosques in Iraq during Friday prayers. Or if Muslim girls in Indonesia had been abducted and beheaded on their way to school, because of their faith.

Areas of the brain responsible for scepticism and vigilance become less active when we fall under the spell of a charismatic figure.  That’s the finding of a study which looked at people’s response to prayers spoken by someone purportedly possessing divine healing powers.
