The world is nearly out of good “.com” domain names—and even the fourth circuit of the United States Court of Appeals agrees.

As global internet usage rises, .com naming is going to get more and more complicated. Our languages only contain a finite number of meaningful words, so brand naming is becoming much more than coming up with a unique, snazzy moniker—it also involves knowledge of intellectual property rights, law, and a large of dash of luck.

U.S. officials announced plans to relinquish federal government control over the administration of the Internet last week., a move that pleased international critics but alarmed some business leaders and others who rely on the smooth functioning of the Web.

ICANN reveals new top-level domain name applications

The list includes: .tattoo, .ketchup, and .mormon.

The list of new generic top-level domain names that have been applied for and can then be owned has been revealed by ICANN.  There are 1,930 new domain names –with tech titans like Amazon, Apple, and Google in the mix–and they’re going to change how the Internet works.

In the world of web properties there is great value in a name, and some people are willing to pay substantial amounts to purchase a great domain name. At least that is what the people at the Louisville, Colorado based non-profit DaVinci Institute are counting on.

A total of 24 domain names are currently listed on their DaVinciFundraiser.COM website as part of a fundraiser designed to raise money DaVinci Institute programs and the Museum of Future Inventions.
