Cubicles are the worst: Study

Workers in cubicles with high partitions were the most miserable.

Is your work station an invading overlord? Do your belongings march across the long desk you share with other workers, spilling out of your space and encroaching on the neutral zones abutting your colleagues’ work areas? Don’t worry, thanks to recent research by Jungsoo Kim and Richard de Dear at the University of Sydney, that mess probably doesn’t bother your coworkers all that much. In fact, of all the myriad annoyances of office life, workspace cleanliness bothered scarcely 10% of workers — although workers in offices where there are no partitions, coworkers were bothered slightly more.

A third of smartphone owners go BYOD without IT department’s knowledge

The majority of staff who own a smartphone or tablet used them at work.

Employees continue to use their own smartphones and tablets at work without the approval of the company’s IT department.  Just over half (56.8%) of 4,371 employees worldwide were using personal devices at work, according to a survey by analyst house Ovum.

In America the poor don’t get holidays off

National holidays in the United States really aren’t national holidays. The U.S. isn’t like the rest of the developed world, we don’t guarantee every worker paid time off. Not for summer vacations. Not for Christmas. Not for Memorial Day. So while most of us kicked back with beer and overcooked burgers this past holiday weekend, many were still be on the clock because they need the check.

Comparing salaries among colleagues has long been a taboo of workplace chatter,

Brian Bader said at the orientation for a tech-support job with Apple Inc. that human-resources managers ran down the list of guidelines workers were expected to follow. Don’t use explicit language on calls with customers. Treat other employees with respect. And, he says, they told the assembled recruits, don’t discuss your pay with co-workers.

Number of Americans quitting their jobs at the highest rate in five years

Latest data says 2.16 million people have quit their jobs.

Americans are voluntarily quitting their jobs at the highest rate since the pre-recession era, according to the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey — known as JOLTS — published by The Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Yahoo CEO Mayer Now Requiring All Remote Employees to Not Be (Remote)

“We need to be one Yahoo!, and that starts with physically being together.”

Here is the internal memo, courtesy of some very irked Yahoo employees, sent to the company about a new rule rolled out by CEO Marissa Mayer.  The new rule requires that Yahoo employees who work remotely relocate to company facilities.
