FDA approves first cannabis-based drug

Epidiolex treats two types of epileptic syndromes

The drug is expected to become available in the fall

New Tiny Silk Brain Implants

Brain saving silk implants
Medical researchers have developed tiny electrodes from silk and thin sheets of metal that can be surgically implanted on the brain. They can gather data and send out electrical signals without causing damage to the patient:

“These implants have the potential to maximize the contact between electrodes and brain tissue, while minimizing damage to the brain,” said Dr. Walter Koroshetz of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, part of the National Institutes of Health, which helped pay for the study.

“They could provide a platform for a range of devices with applications in epilepsy, spinal cord injuries and other neurological disorders.”

Great Apes Know They Could Be Wrong, Research Suggests

In a series of three experiments, seven gorillas, eight chimpanzees, four bonobos and seven orangutans, from the Wolfgang Köhler Research Center at the Leipzig Zoo in Germany, were presented with two hollow tubes, one baited with a food reward, the other not. The apes were then observed as they tried to find the reward.

Great apes — orangutans, chimpanzees, bonobos and gorillas — realize that they can be wrong when making choices, according to Dr. Josep Call from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany. Dr. Call’s study was just published online in Springer’s journal, Animal Cognition.

Epileptic Artist To Induce Seizure On Stage

seizure Rita_Marcalo

Artist, Rita Marcalo, who has suffered epileptic seizures in private for 20 years is attempting to induce one for a public performance. Ms Marcalo has stopped taking medication ahead of next month’s production entitled Involuntary Dances which she claims is to raise awareness of the condition.

But she is facing criticism for putting herself at risk and the voyeuristic nature of the 24-hour event which is being funded by a 13,889 Arts Council grant.

People will be invited to film her at Bradford Playhouse, West Yorkshire, where she will use strobe lighting, fasting and raising her body temperature to try and bring about a seizure.

Researchers Identify Where And How The Brain Recreates Memories

Scientists have for the first time recorded individual brain cells in the act of summoning a spontaneous memory, revealing not only where a remembered experience is registered but also, in part, how the brain is able to recreate it.

Root Cause of Epilepsy Found

Root Cause of Epilepsy Found

If only we all had glowing brains like this dude, we’d know what’s happening in there

Researchers in the United States said that they had found the key to a decades-old riddle over epileptic fits, helping to advance the quest for new treatments for this disabling condition.

Experiments in the last century found that by breathing carbon dioxide (CO²), an epileptic patient boosted acid levels in the brain and could terminate a fit, although the molecular switch for achieving this was veiled in mystery.

Easing the Seizures, and Stigma, of Epilepsy

Easing the Seizures, and Stigma, of Epilepsy

Half of all epilepsy patients are children

Epilepsy affects 50 million people worldwide and more than 2.7 million people in the United States; half of all patients are children. Especially in its intractable form, also called refractory epilepsy, the disorder — and the side effects of epilepsy medications — can cause problems in learning, memory and behavior, and indelibly alter development. Epilepsy can also consume families, monopolizing their time, money and energy.

Despite the number of people with epilepsy — the disorder affects more Americans than do Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis and Lou Gehrig’s disease combined — it still carries a stigma that dates to ancient civilizations.
