The New York City–based “think/do tank,” Google Ideas, is run by the Internet search giant, Google, and they are launching several new technologies designed to highlight hacker attacks around the world and help people in repressive regimes access the Internet. The new products, announced this week at the Google Ideas Summit in New York City, represent the most substantial offerings delivered by the three-year-old Google policy unit and could be a major boon to activists and reformers in the world’s most closed and repressive societies.

Google launched the Quantum Artificial Intelligence Lab last May, with hardware from the Canadian quantum computing company D-Wave and technical expertise from NASA. It was an ambitious open research project aimed at exploring both the capabilities of quantum computer architecture and the mysteries of space exploration — but in the months since, they’ve stayed quiet about exactly what kind of work they’ve been doing there.

YouTube’s mobile traffic is up 25% from last year.
YouTube seems to be the exception when it comes to getting people to concentrate long on anything on their phones and tablets. YouTube is quickly going mobile, with small screens making up 40% of its traffic now compared to 25% last year, Google said on its earnings call today. In 2011, just 6% of YouTube traffic came from mobile.

Google might want to partner its technology with auto manufacturers rather than making and selling the cars itself.
Almost all the world’s automotive manufacturers are scrambling to develop self-driving cars. But, it appears, the world would rather buy a self-driving car made by a tech company. Consumers are more likely to splurge on a self-driving car made by Mercedes-Benz than Nissan; they’re even likelier to buy one made by the likes of Google and Apple, according to a study released by audit and advisory firm KPMG on Oct. 10.

Web marketing has been completely turned upside down.
Google announced back in October 2011 that it was going to start blocking valuable data about which keywords consumers use to discover your content. By encrypting all searches, Google would instead dump visits from natural search into the nebulous “not provided” category in web analytics software.

Google wants you to gesture when you drive.
Google wants to take advantage of our ability to make gestures. Google will be able to read and decipher any number of gesture commands by mounting a camera in your car’s ceiling and a laser in your dashboard. Swiping downward near your window will roll it down for you, while pointing to the radio will pump up the music.
