Hispanics Comprise Almost Half of All People Sentenced to Federal Prison


The prison system has many more Hispanics than it did 10 years ago.

Hispanics now comprising half of all people sentenced for felony crimes in the U.S.  Programs like Operation Streamline, institute a “zero tolerance policy” for illegal border crossings where immigration crimes have skyrocketed.

Detroit’s Population Shrank 25% in Last Decade

The Motor City’s engine is dying. Detroit’s population shrank by more than 25% in the last decade, according to Census statistics reported in the New York Times. The city’s population fell to 713,777 in 2010, a drop of almost 240,000 residents. That’s 100,000 more than Katrina-ravaged New Orleans lost.

Germans Feel Threatened By Islam According to Poll

Germans are less tolerant of Muslims than their western European neighbors and feel threatened by Islam — largely due to lack of contact with them, according to a survey released Thursday.  Only 34% of Germans in the west of the country and 26% in eastern Germany think positively of Muslims, according to a poll by the University of Muenster. In comparison, 62% of Dutch, 56% of French, 55% of Danes and 47% of Portuguese hold positive attitudes on Muslims.

Growing Trend of Employers Skimping on Wages Leave Immigrants Vulnerable


D.C. Jobs With Justice has launched a new effort to empower the District’s low-skilled workers to fight employers skimping on wages.

On a recent Saturday morning, a group of Latino men wearing paint-spattered jeans and grim expressions strode through Adams Morgan in search of the contractor who had cheated them. He’d hired them to remodel a wine shop in the Northwest neighborhood in November and December but paid a fraction of what he had promised before disappearing. Now they were hoping the owner of the shop could offer clues as to the contractor’s whereabouts.

4 Key Demographic Trends with the Housing Demand


Towns move back to the concept of a walkable multiuse town center.

Demographic shifts and changing values will increase demand for pedestrian-friendly, mixed-use communities in both urban and suburban settings, according to John McIlwain of the Urban Land Institute. “The age of suburbanization and growing homeownership is over,” McIlwain said in a recent report, “Housing in America: The Next Decade.” “The coming decades will be the time of the great reurbanization as 24/7 central cities grow and suburbs around the country are redeveloped with new or revived walkable suburban town centers.” This transition will be fueled by the growth of two-person households, an end to baby boomers’ suburban infatuation, and public policies designed to stimulate compact development. In his report, McIlwain points to four key demographic trends to watch going forward:

Census Data Shows Changes Due To Recession


A smaller share of Americans married, drove to work alone, owned their own home or moved to a new residence last year than the year before.  More lived in overcrowded housing. Property values declined. And fewer immigrants arrived, which meant that for the first time since the beginning of the decade, the total number of foreign-born people in the country did not grow.
