NASA looking to private companies to mine the moon

schmitt.moon.nasa

Below the surface there exist deposits of water, rare minerals, and other substances not so common here on Earth.

Instead of NASA resupplying the International Space Station, private corporations have taken on that job. Mars One has just as good a chance as NASA does at establishing a permanent colony on Mars. Even the Moon, which has for so long been NASA’s claim to fame, is now being offered up on a silver NASA-backed platter.

NASA plans to make water and oxygen on the surface of the Moon and Mars by 2020

NASA is taking steps that could lead to colonization of other planets.

NASA is working on plans to make water, oxygen, and hydrogen on the surface of the Moon and Mars. It is vital that we find a way of extracting these vital gases and liquids from moons and planets if we ever want to colonize other planets, rather than transporting them from Earth (which is prohibitively expensive, due to Earth’s gravity). The current plan is to land a rover on the Moon in 2018 that will try to extract hydrogen, water, and oxygen — and then hopefully, Curiosity’s successor will try to convert the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere into oxygen in 2020 when it lands on Mars.

A look inside Google’s futuristic quantum lab

D-Wave quantum computer.

Google launched the Quantum Artificial Intelligence Lab last May, with hardware from the Canadian quantum computing company D-Wave and technical expertise from NASA. It was an ambitious open research project aimed at exploring both the capabilities of quantum computer architecture and the mysteries of space exploration — but in the months since, they’ve stayed quiet about exactly what kind of work they’ve been doing there.

NASA plans to grow vegetables in space

NASA is organizing the Vegetable Production System (VEGGIE) program that will send packs of seed material to the ISS.

When humans begin colonizing space there is one challenge we’ll be facing, how to get food to those colonies. The idea of farming in space is hardly a new one.  Astronaut Don Pettit successfully grew a zucchini, broccoli, and sunflower on the ISS, but NASA is now researching how vegetables may be grown in space for consumption.

Proposal to Eliminate Forest Fires Completely

Futurist Thomas Frey: Over the past few days I’ve been listening to news reports about the devastating fires burning in Colorado.

Record heat, high winds, low humidity, and large amounts of beetle-killed trees have created “perfect storm” conditions for multiple wildfires to rage across the State.

NASA working on faster than the speed of light travel

We are at the point right now where faster-than-light travel is still theoretical, but possible.

Currently, NASA is working on the first practical field test toward the possibility of faster than light travel.Traveling faster than light has always been attributed to science fiction, but that all changed when Harold White and his team at NASA started to work on and tweak the Alcubierre Drive.

NASA awards grant for 3D food printer, starts with pizza

Watch the grant-winning prototype print some synthesized chocolate.

NASA awards a $125,000 grant to Anjan Contractor, head of Systems & Materials Research Corporation, to develop a 3D food printer. Under the six-month grant, the first device Contractor plans to build is based on epRap’s open-source hardware and will be designed to print a pizza comprised of three layers of nutritional powders mixed with water and oil.

The plan to end world hunger with 3D printed food

Anjan Contractor’s 3D food printer might remind you of the “replicator” popularized in Star Trek where Captain Picard was constantly interrupting himself to order tea.  Contractor’s company, Systems & Materials Research Corporation, just got a six month, $125,000 grant from NASA to create a prototype of his universal food synthesizer.

European Space Agnecy wants a 3D printed building on the moon

Moonbase

The European Space Agency wants to 3-D print a moon base.  But one of the biggest challenges would be the expense (in terms of energy) to get supplies off of Earth.  One way is to send as little as possible to the Moon.  Couldn’t we just make a moon base out of rock?  After all, the moon is already made of rocks. (Pics)
