The Internet of Things in action

The Internet of Things is nothing simpler than objects being connected to the internet.

Six billion objects in the world will be connected to the internet by 2015. The internet of things is nothing simpler, and more stunning, than objects being connected to the internet. At its most mind-blowing, these objects are learning and adapting to the behavior of the user. (Videos)

Radio Waves Can ‘See’ People Through Solid Walls

see through walls

Engineers have developed a wireless network of radio transmitters that can track people moving behind solid walls. The system could help police, firefighters and others nab intruders, and rescue hostages, fire victims and elderly people. It also might help retail marketing and border control.

Astronomers Spot New Planet Six Times The Mass Of Jupiter

Astronomers Spot New Planet Six Times The Mass Of Jupiter

The technology allows astronomers to see planets of Jupiter’s mass in other galaxies

Researchers from the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) claim it is the first planet to be seen outside of our galaxy.

The scientists used a new method of viewing space called microlensing. The method uses a nearer object to bend the light of a distant star when the two align with an observer.

Smart Camera That May Someday Be A Robot’s Eye

 Matrox Iris GT Camera

Wondering what Montreal-based Matrox has been doing since it conceded the graphics card wars to NVIDIA and ATI a few years ago? Besides building lots of great video editing equipment, the company has been working on Iris GT, a smart camera that’s packed with processing power and might just be a body part of our future robot overlords.

 Mahru II

The robot masters at KIST (Korea Institute of Science and Technology) have updated their Mahru II robot with the new Mahru Humanoid Robot that is now a dead ringer for Sony’s tiny dancing QRIO robot. Scheduled to make its first major public appearance at Korea’s Robot World conference this week, the main feature of Mahru is its ability to simultaneously move its upper and lower body independently to perform dance moves or human-like actions in the same fashion as Honda’s amazing Asimo robot.

Bionic Hands With Gel-filled Fingertips Give Greater Sensitivity

Bionic Hands May Help Person “Feel” Objects

 Bionic Hand With Gel-filled Fingertips

If things go well, prostheses may soon help a person “feel” too. Bionic hands with gelled fingertips may be the answer to provide the wearer with a sense of touch and sensitivity. This may even help them instinctively hold objects, because humans have a built-in reflex that responds to vibrations. The top part of the bionic hands are now going to consist of a rubber skin filled with thick silicon gel. If an object should slip, the elastic skin transmits the vibrations through the gel to acoustic sensors, which provide instant feedback, and the motors can tighten their grip. Also, the finger’s bone is covered with electrodes, which change the electric conduction according to the pressure that helps the user to feel.

Cyber-Goggles Record and Identify Every Object You See

Cyber-Goggles Record and Identify Every Object You See

Researchers at the University of Tokyo have developed a smart video goggle system that records everything the wearer looks at, recognizes and assigns names to objects that appear in the video.

Advanced programs then go back and create an easily searchable database of the recorded footage. Designed to function as a high-tech memory aid, these ‘Cyber Goggles’ promise to make the act of losing your keys a thing of the past, according to head researcher professor Tatsuya Harada.
