Airline coach seats are getting even worse

There’s a new low for the long-haul traveler. Airlines are ordering new Dreamliner 787s and Airbus A330s and are asking to have them fitted with 16.7″-wide coach seats. These are planes intended for intercontinental flights — six to 14 hours! — and they’re shaving the armrests, squeezing the seats, and otherwise cramming in passengers. The airlines say it’ll all be OK — they’ll just distract you from your terrible circumstances with big meals and TV.

Airbus Hopes to Build Transparent Passenger Plane

airbus

This is your captain speaking, your plane is about to become invisible!

Aircraft manufacturer Airbus has revealed it hopes to build a passenger plane with a completely transparent fuselage. At the push of a button the captain would send an electrical pulse through a hi-tech ceramic skin making the main body of the plane see-through, Der Spiegel reports.

The image, posted on Flightglobal, is thought to be genuine

An image of an obese passenger squeezed into an economy airline seat has reopened a debate about how airlines deal with growing numbers of oversized passengers. The picture, posted on an aviation blog, was reportedly taken by a flight attendant to illustrate to airline managers the difficulty of dealing with passengers who cannot fit into seats.

TXTBlocker: Stops Texting While Driving

TXTBlocker

TXTBlocker is a software and online service combo which locks off a registered mobile phone from making or receiving text messages or calls while in a car. It uses cell and GPS data to determine location and speed and decide whether the phone is actually in a car, and once it thinks it is, boom, the service is automatically limited.

Historical Passenger Solar Eclipse Flight Planned

Historical Passenger Solar Eclipse Flight Planned

View this century’s longest solar eclipse aboard the JetLite 737-700

On Wednesday, July 22, 2009, we are going to witness the greatest eclipse of the 21st century. A total eclipse of the sun will be visible from within a narrow corridor that traverses half of Earth. The path of the Moon’s umbral shadow will begin in India and cross through Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar and China. Here is a great chance for the eclipse chasers to fly above the clouds at level four-one-zero to have a clear view of the eclipse.

Where Russian Supersonic Jets Go To Die

Some parts of the plane still work!

Tu-144 which first flew on 31 December 1968 (two months before Concorde) is the fastest supersonic commercial airliner ever made. Despite the similarity of the Tu-144 to Concorde, there were significant differences in the control, navigation and engine systems. The Tu-144 was in some ways a more technologically advanced aircraft, but in areas such as range, aerodynamic sophistication, braking and engine control, it lagged behind Concorde.  A total of 16 airworthy Tu-144s were built, Aeroflot had only made 55 scheduled passenger flights with their Tu-144s before they put them out of service.  (PICS)

This tiny solar car, called Xof1 (Power of One), has just broken the world distance record for a solar-powered vehicle, and is still going and going. Beginning its record-breaking trek last June, it’s gone from Buffalo, N.Y. to the Arctic Circle and back, next making it all the way across the continent to Los Angeles, traveling a total of more than 12,500 miles. Passenger Jet Powered By Jet Fuel Made From A Weed

Passenger Jet Powered By Jet Fuel Made From A Weed

Technicians at UOP examine equipment used to convert jatropha oil into jet fuel.

On December 3, a Boeing 747 belonging to Air New Zealand is scheduled to take off from Auckland, New Zealand, powered in part by a new type of jet fuel made from a weed. A mixture of equal parts biofuel and conventional fuel will run one of the plane’s engines. The biofuel, which could help reduce carbon-dioxide emissions, was developed by UOP, a major supplier of technology for petroleum refining.
