Global music sales growing for first time this century

In 2012, global music sales rose by 0.3 percent to $16.5 billion.  This marks the first good year for the music industry since 1999.The music industry’s 21st century renaissance comes down to four factors: Better mobile technology, a growing global middle class, more music-listening options, and an effective crackdown on piracy that is making paid music a more attractive option.

Chinese e-commerce company had $3 billion in sales in just one day

Three billion dollars is almost triple the entire 2011 Black Friday sales of e-commerce sites in the United States.

The Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba shocked the web last week with the news that its subsidiaries Taobao (like a Chinese eBay) and T-mall (like Amazon) sold a massive $3.06 billion in product in a single 24-hour period.

On the Kobo e-reader the average reader will take just seven hours to read the last book in Suzanne Collins’s “Hunger Games” trilogy, that’s about 57 pages an hour.  Nearly 18,000 Kindle readers have highlighted the same line from the second book in the series: “Because sometimes things happen to people and they’re not equipped to deal with them.” And on Barnes & Noble’s Nook, the first thing that most readers do upon finishing the first “Hunger Games” book is to download the next one.

Sales of foreclosed homes account for 26% of all home sales in the U.S.

The average sales price of homes in foreclosure or bank owned was $161,214.

The leading online marketplace for foreclosure properties,  RealtyTrac® has released it Q1 2012 U.S. Foreclosure Sales Report™ which shows that sales of homes that were in some stage of foreclosure or bank owned accounted for 26 percent of all U.S. residential sales during the first quarter.  The sales are up from 22% of all sales in the fourth quarter and up from 25 percent of all sales in the first quarter of 2011.

Smartphone sales will blow away PC sales this year and will exceed 1.5 billion per year by 2016

Smartphone sales will exceed 1.5 billion units per year by 2016.

Last year smartphone sales blew past the number of PCs sold, and they’ll be nearly twice PC sales this year, analyst Alex Cocotas of BI Intelligence predicts.
