Surprising huge diversity in aging revealed in nature

Not all species weaken and become more likely to die as they age.

Most people would probably describe aging as when we our in our youth we are strong and healthy and then we weaken and die. But, in nature, the phenomenon of aging shows an unexpected diversity of patterns and is altogether rather strange, conclude researchers from The University of Southern Denmark.

‘Doomsday vault’ keeps over 800,000 plant species on ice

Svalbard Global Seed Vault

The Svalbard Global Seed Vault, or “doomsday vault,” on a remote Norwegian island in the Arctic Circle took its first deposits in March 2008. The vault’s builders had spent some $7 million and 12 months blasting a tunnel and three chambers into the mountainside’s hard permafrost. To be stored within? Treasure.

The assassin bug is less than a centimeter in length and that is something for which, quite possibly, we can be truly grateful! The bug is found in Malaysia and has a trick up its sleeve once it has finished its dinner. It attaches the empty carcases of its victims on its back – a ploy thought to be an attempt to avoid becoming a victim itself. (Photos)

‘King of Wasps’ – giant new species of wasp discovered in Indonesia

Two-and-a-half inch monster has jaws longer than its legs.

A new species of wasp discovered on the Indonesian island Sulawesi is two-and-a-half inches long, and has jaws so vast that its discoverer admits, ‘I don’t know how it can walk.’ (Pics)

About 90% of the plant and animal species on Earth have yet to be discovered or classified according to scientists.  Earth is estimated to be home to just under 9 million species, a study says.

‘Laughing’ cicadas among 75 new species discovered

Experts say a new species of ‘laughing’ cicada abounds in the mountains of Batangas.

Laughing cicadas and small “cat sharks” are among scores of species believed new to science discovered by US and Filipino researchers in waters and islands of the Philippines, the team said Wednesday.
