Startups can learn a lot from ‘end-ups’

End-ups are old companies and institutions that want to be become more like start-up, and startups want to become more like end-ups.

At the DLD Conference in Munich, John Maeda, President of RISD, sat onstage with the co-founder and CPO of Airbnb, Joe Gebbia. They discussed the unique creative culture at Rhode Island School of Design, where Joe went to college, and where John currently serves as president. Joe shared some of his secrets of being a successful designer-founder. He asked John what it’s like to run a 136-year-old institution like RISD.

Top 5 hottest careers you may have never considered

There are plenty of job siting open despite the less-than-booming U.S. employment market. But there’s a mismatch between the skills that applicants have and the skills required for the careers that are in hot demand. Among employers, 25% reported that they had open positions in science and engineering that were hard to fill, and 18% said they were struggling to fill jobs in computer programming and information technology (IT), according to a 2011 report by McKinsey & Co. Looking ahead, employers could face a shortage of 85 million high- and medium-skilled workers worldwide by 2020.

Jobs in the U.S. with the lowest (and highest) unemployment rates

Unemployment rate for petroleum engineers is .06%.

Petroleum engineers, detective supervisors, and animal breeders all have one thing in common.  They are  extremely employable. They’re among the occupations with the lowest jobless rates over the last two years along with dentists and nuclear engineers, according to the Wall Street Journal’s study of data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

TV still king in media consumption: Nielsen

Here is one more 2012 year-in review report from Nielsen, which examined how Americans have been consuming content over the course of the past year.  Of the 289 million U.S. TV owners, the report found that 119 million own four or more television sets, making TV still the device to beat when it comes to watching and recording programs, among other things.
