Recently, inventor Sean McElduff took a moment answer some questions about sand, cards and portability…

What was the defining moment that led you to create this product? What problem does it solve?

I am not sure of the defining moment but I am sure it happened on Long Beach Island, NJ. It is very difficult to play cards on the beach on top of a cooler or on a blanket and the wind is always blowing the cards around. This table takes care of both of those issues with the convenience of built in cup holders, portability, and weather resistant construction.

After you came up with the idea, how did you size up the market and decide who your customers would be?

I am working on the concept of identifying the exact market but I am certain it will be most useful at any beach style resorts or vacation spots. It is still a work in progress.

How did you go about naming your product?

Wind Proof Beach Card Table is exactly what it is, but I am open to suggestions.

How long did it take you to create you initial prototype, and what problems did you run into along the way?

The first prototype was created within a day with materials that were readily available and it has gone through some minor changes but basically returned to the original idea. The biggest problems I had initially were getting some of the materials and now I am experiencing the most difficult part of how to mass produce and market the Windproof Beach Card Table.

Funding a new idea is always tricky. How did you go about lining up the money you needed?

My present costs are sustainable but if I want to enter into the mass production market I will need funding and I hope to generate interest by attending the Davinci Inventor Showcase.

Is this a product you’d like to produce and sell yourself, or are you wanting to license it to someone else? And if so, who?

I would like remain involved if I enter the mass production market but I will need help. If I don’t enter the mass production market I will maintain whatever production and sales that I can handle.

What all channels are you using to market your product?

I am only using word of mouth now but I have started a website and I am looking for assistance ( or $$$ ) to further advertise if necessary.

How many people do you currently have involved in your business?

I have about a dozen people helping me with ideas and presentation but none are employed as yet.

How do you define success? What would hitting a “home run” look like in your mind?

Developing the Windproof Beach Card Table into a widely marketed product and maintaining my ownership while making a profit.
