Instabeat is a new device that attaches to your goggles and lets you track your performance using a Heads-up-display (HUD) when swimming. It can track heart rate, breathing pace, calories, laps and turns during your swimming session.

The device weighs only 30g and is designed to reduce water friction – meaning it won’t get in the way when you’re swimming. It also does away with the need for a chest belt – leaving room for essential head and arm movements. Instead, the device monitors heart rate via the temporal artery in the head and displays this information as color on the lens of the goggles.

Apart from heart rate, swimmers will be able to access the more advances statistics such as calories, laps and turns once the device has been connected to their computer. This information can be saved and compared over time with past athletic performance to make sure that progress is being made.

So now it’s possible to use hard data to help you improve on land, but also in the pool.
