While a human is picking up the phone, and a human is dialing the phone, it may not be a conversation between two humans.

In the future humans will interact with each other, and machines, and systems that can only properly be called cyborg.  People are fielding millions of calls from bright, energetic telemarketers, but what they don’t know is that they’re talking to machines… Sort of. (Video)

Cubli: A cube that can jump, balance itself, and walk

The Cubli is a 15 × 15 × 15 centimeter cube that can jump up and balance on its corner. Reaction wheels mounted on three faces of the cube rotate at high angular velocities and then brake suddenly, causing the Cubli to jump up.

Hawaii’s solar boom is so successful it’s been blocked from further expansion

William Walker and his wife, Mi Chong, wanted to join what’s seen as a solar revolution in Hawaii. Shortly after buying their Oahu home earlier this year, they plunked down $35,000 for a rooftop photovoltaic system. The couple looked forward to joining neighbors who had added panels, to cutting their $250 monthly power bills and to knowing they were helping the environment.

Amazon vs. Indie self-publishing sales platforms

With an indie, as soon as you upload the file, you can sell it. With KDP, you’ve got to wait until it appears on Amazon.

Web designer and writer, Paul Jarvis has self-published three books and has sold close to a total of 10,000 copies. With two of the books he used Gumroad and Sellfy which are indie sales platforms (digital goods e-commerce services). His latest book was on Amazon’s KDP Select platform.

The NSA’s $10 million secret deal to get RSA to use backdoored encryption algorithm

RSA had been paid by the NSA to set the backdoored algorithm as the default method of random number generation.

A secret $10 million deal between the NSA and the security firm RSA has resulted in RSA incorporating a flawed algorithm for generating random numbers into its products, creating a backdoor into encrypted communications.

10 Jobs for tomorrow that barely exist today (Infographic)

Tomorrow’s graduates will be facing a much different environment than the ones their parents entered in the last generation. The home automation business is enabling the Internet of Things

The home automation market size is around $8.8 billion.

In terms of homes that have a broadband connection as a market for home automation, the market size turns out to be around $8.8 billion at $100 spent per home or $880 billion at $10,000 for the U.S. If we are a little more conservative and say that only those broadband subscribers who use smartphones are targets, the range turns out to be about $5.63 – $563 billion. In order to capture this opportunity a number of business models have come into play. While these are not new business models, it is interesting to see how this opportunity is being captured.
