Scientists sober up drunken mice with nanocapsules

Nanocapsules reduced the blood alcohol levels in the drunken mice.

Intoxicated mice were injected with a nanocapsule containing enzymes that are instrumental in alcohol metabolism.  The nanocapsules reduced the blood alcohol levels in the mice. The treatment demonstrates a novel drug delivery technology that could have broad medical applications.

San Antonio will launch first digital-only library in the U.S.

A rendering of BiblioTech, a public library offering only electronic books that is scheduled to open in San Antonio.

The first fully digital public library in the U.S. will open in San Antonio, Texas this year.  This library will not contain a single book. The facility in Bexar county is part of a planned state-wide bookless system called BiblioTech, is modeled on an Apple store rather than a traditional library, but it will retain all the important features: more than 100 e-readers available to borrow, with more than 10,000 ebooks – and visitors can bring their own devices, too.

Why almost everyone in Russia has a dash-mounted video camera

There were about a dozen different motorists around that Russian city of Chelyabinsk who were able to capture video of the massive meteor that flew through the sky last Friday.  How was it possible that so many people videotaped the event?  Because almost everyone in Russia has a dash-mounted video camera in their car. First ‘bionic eye’ implants will hit the U.S. market this year

The treatment involves electrodes implanted in the eyes of people whose retinas are damaged.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first treatment that can restore (limited) eyesight to (some) blind people, last week.  It’s an exciting milestone, despite the caveats.

Startup experience doesn’t help social entrepreneurs

There is no evidence that prior founding experience is translating into superior performance for social entrepreneurs.

All of the conventional wisdom and research says entrepreneurs with prior entrepreneurial experience outperform entrepreneurs who have never launched a new enterprise.  Investors know that it’s often wiser to bet on someone who has started something before.

Urbee – World’s first 3D printed car ready for production

The Urbee – a 3D printed car.

This is 2013, and you probably won’t be surprised to hear that someone was using 3D printers to make a car.  In this case, the car is the Urbee, a tiny three=wheeled economy car with an electric motor, internal combustion engine, and a 3D printed frame.
