WASP’s giant 3D printer can build houses from mud in some of the most remote places on Earth

This 3D printer has been developed to build cheap, sustainable houses using a clay-like paste.

WASP, an Italian 3D printer company, demonstrated a giant, three-armed printer they created at Maker Faire Rome. WASP’s 3D printer is unique as it can be assembled on site within two hours, and then filled with mud and fiber to build extremely cheap houses in some of the most remote places on Earth. The Markthal Rotterdam is an enormous new market hall that has opened its doors in Rotterdam in the Netherlands, and it’s turning quite a few heads. The market hall is a curiously elongated horseshoe of a building, has a 36,000 square foot mural covering its rounded ceiling. (Photos)

Why rent is so expensive in cities: Parking spaces

Underground parking is extremely expensive to build.

Many factors contribute to drive up the price of rents, but parking is among the most significant, according to University of California Los Angeles professor and renowned parking guru Donald Shoup. During the CityLab 2014 conference in Los Angeles last week BuzzFeed News sat down with Shoup to talk about how parking makes housing more expensive. His point: “It’s unfair to have cities where parking is free for cars and housing is expensive for people.”

Calgary’s Snøhetta-designed public library will be the Apple Store of libraries

Shaunacy Ferro:  Hanging out at the library might just become cool as Calgary, Canada has plans to build a new lending library. The library will be designed by Snøhetta, an architecture firm. The library will have a  240,000-square-foot center and will be more than just a repository for plastic-protected books. Twice as large as Calgary’s existing public library, it’s designed to be both a circulating public library and a community gathering space, a combination bookstore/computer lab/cafe/event space/social hub that provides a pathway between two disconnected neighborhoods. Constructed entirely by a robotic prefab building system, it showcases the current developments and innovations in computational design and robotic fabrication for lightweight timber construction.
