Sitting needlessly at stoplights, or watching the minutes tick away as I wait in some line, or being forced to fill out yet another form, our precious time is being coopted by everyone from inconsiderate businesses, to overbearing government, to painful security checks at the airport.

Only 1% of online Black Friday sales were driven by social media

Only 1% of orders on shopping sites came from people who visited a social network immediately before.

Online sales on Black Friday hit another record this year. Social media only played a relatively small role — at least when measured directly, according to the latest data from IBM.

3D printed prosthetic eyes could be made faster, cheaper, and better

3D printed prosthetic eyes.

U.K.-based Fripp Design has found a surprising application with 3D printing: prosthetic eyes. Fripp Design says it can churn out as many as 150 prosthetic eyes an hour, and sell them for as low as $160 each. That’s a major improvement over glass prosthetic eyes, which not only take weeks to make, but also sell for thousands of dollars.

ET3 Indiegogo campaign to make tube transport technology a reality in California

Both Evacuated Tube Transport Technologies (ET3) and Hyperloop want to compete against California High Speed Rail (HSR).  So, ET3 has begun an Indiegogo campaign to fund the legal research and drafting of a California proposition that will remove the obstacles holding back ET3 and Hyperloop from competing to deliver a next generation ground transportation system that the traffic and smog ridden residents of California deserve.

Japan wants to supply the world’s energy from a giant solar power plant on the moon

The Japanese architectural and engineering firm, Shimizu, has a solution for the climate crisis: Simply build a band of solar panels 400 kilometers (249 miles) wide running all the way around the Moon’s 11,000-kilometer (6,835 mile) equator and beam the carbon-free energy back to Earth in the form of microwaves, which are converted into electricity at ground stations.

Ex-smokers earn more than those who have never smoked

It has been well documented that smokers make less money than nonsmokers, but it’s less widely known that former smokers earn a 7% wage premium over people who have never smoked, according to an analysis of nearly two decades of U.S. data by Julie L. Hotchkiss of Georgia State University and M. Melinda Pitts of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta.

Do you want to make more money? It’s easy, just move to San Jose, Houston, or Washington D.C. Well, maybe it’s not really so easy. Of course there’s no guarantee that you’ll earn a bigger paycheck in these cities—but it is more likely, as they’re among the highest-paying metro areas in the country.
