A record number of folks age 85 and older are working. Here’s what they’re doing

Bob Blocksom, 87, is interested in becoming a truck driver to help pay for medical expenses for his wife.

Seventy may be the new 60, and 80 may be the new 70, but 85 is still pretty old to work. Yet in some ways, this is the era of the very old worker in America.

Overall, 255,000 Americans 85 years old and over were working over the last 12 months. That’s 4.4% of Americans that age — up from 2.6% in 2006, before the recession. It’s the highest number on record.

Cobots are transforming the factory floor — but they’re not replacing humans

Combining human creativity and automation is unlocking new efficiencies.

The increased presence of robots on factory floors has been a boon to manufacturers, who have embraced automation as a way to increase efficiency and cut costs. But there’s been less optimism among human workers, who worry that the rise of robots will render human workers inessential.

In recent years, however, a new school of thought has gained ground: Rather than replace their human counterparts, the manufacturing robots of the future will work alongside them. This future can be seen in the arrival of “cobots,” robots designed to complement human workers. While humans excel at abstract thinking and problem solving, robots shine at bringing speed and accuracy to repetitive, sometimes dangerous tasks. Imagine a factory where robots do the heavy-lifting as humans focus on more meaningful work, where production lines can run unsupervised for weeks with minimal manufacturing defects. In the connected industrial workforce of the future, robots complement workers, improve productivity, and increase operational efficiency.

Amazon is recruiting people to start delivery businesses. Here’s why I think some people could get rich

As technology has advanced, Thomas Malone has watched his old family farm change drastically. The farm he grew up on once employed 15 people full-time and another 30 or 40 seasonally. Now, five people and many more machines farm about three times as many acres in land to produce significantly more goods.

Employee burnout is a huge problem in the tech industry. This survey shows which companies have it the worst

Employee burnout and stress is a big problem in the average American workplace, but it’s especially true among some of the country’s biggest tech companies, many of which have famously rigorous workplace cultures that often encourage long hours, favor young people, and sometimes require unreasonably high levels of productivity.

Blind, a message board app created for employees to talk about work anonymously, surveyed more than 11,000 employees at 30 of the biggest tech companies to find out just how many of them feel burnt out by their work.

The Cryptocurrency Job Market Is Exploding

It can feel like a new cryptocurrency is popping up every hour, and that’s because they basically are. There are more than 1,500 tradeable cryptocurrencies. In 2017 alone, there were between 2.9 and 5.8 million people using crypto wallets throughout the year, compared to 0.3 to 1.3 million in 2013. There’s a $320-billion-plus market cap across all cryptocurrencies today.

It’s safe to say, the crypto market is growing. While this growth has helped some people strike it rich, it’s also benefited the job market. Between December 2016 and December 2017, there was a 207 percent increase in job postings for Blockchain positions on Indeed.com.

Ireland could gain 100,000 jobs by embracing driverless technology

A Waymo self-driving vehicle is parked outside the Alphabet company’s offices where its been testing autonomous vehicles in Arizona.

New study calls on Goverment to take active role in making most of opportunities present.

As many as 100,000 high-end direct and indirect jobs could be created in Ireland by 2030 as driverless cars become the norm, a new report claims.

The study suggests the State has the potential to become a leading global hub for companies developing connected and autonomous vehicle technology.

The coming jobs apocalypse

Congress and the Trump administration have yet to create a coherent policy response to a widely forecast social and economic tsunami resulting from automation, including the potential for decades of flat wages and joblessness. But cities and regions are starting to act on their own.

What’s happening: In Indianapolis, about 338,000 people are at high risk of automation taking their jobs, according to a new report. In Phoenix, the number is 650,000. In both cases, that’s 35% of the workforce. In northeastern Ohio, about 40,000 workers are at high risk.
