WHO classifies ‘gaming disorder’ as mental health condition

IMG_7466

(CNN) — Watching as a video game ensnares their child, many a parent has grumbled about “digital heroin,” likening the flashing images to one of the world’s most addictive substances.

Now, they may have backup: The World Health Organization announced “gaming disorder” as a new mental health condition included in the 11th edition of its International Classification of Diseases, released Monday.

CBD is changing the health industry

IMG_7391

CBD is legal, and has been taken off the WADA Prohibited Substances List.

In February 2008–ten years ago this past winter–Thomas Vanderham, a mainstay in freeride mountain biking, crashed badly in Utah while filming for The Collective’s third movie, “Seasons.” With most footage bagged for the spring release that year, his crew was trying to add on in the ninth hour. The crash put a stop to Vanderham’s expanded part–there wasn’t enough footage from the trip to put it in the film–and according to his doctors, it nearly put a stop to his riding, too.

The Cult of Peloton: Reinventing the Fitness Industry, and Becoming a Microcultural Phenomenon

IMG_7131

High-tech cycling platform creates a connected community.

At Peloton, Robin Arzon, vp, fitness programming, says classes are known as ‘shows’ and instructors as ‘talent.’

Until a month ago, I had never taken a spin class. While friends and colleagues made regular pilgrimages to boutique fitness studios like SoulCycle or Flywheel, the allure of sweating buckets and feverishly cycling en masse to the beat of Beyoncé as an all-too enthusiastic instructor shouts encouragement about “feeling the burn, baby!” eluded me.

Mostly, I prefer to exercise alone.

Why a faecal transplant could save your life

IMG_6592

The faecal transplant, also known as trans-poo-sion, surely has the title of medicine’s most disgusting procedure.

It is pretty much what you are imagining – part of a faecal stool is taken from one person and given to another.

The purpose is to introduce new beneficial microbes to the receiving patient’s digestive system.

And it can be life-saving.

28 of the most dangerous things science has strongly linked to cancer

IMG_6372

Cancer is the No. 2 cause of death in the US, second only to heart disease.

It fundamentally affects the way our cells grow and divide, changing them in perverse ways. All cancer is a result of damage or genetic mutations in our DNA. The nasty, debilitating class of diseases spreads through a body like an invading army, as toxic cells grow relentlessly into unruly tumors.

Non-electric waterpik

The Pocket Flosser is the perfect addition to the toothbrush, giving you the best electric oral care experience without electricity or batteries. Using ingenuity, and principles of physics, the Pocket Flosser is a waterpik that can clean your teeth effectively using water or even your mouthwash. Relying on an internal pump that lets you build high pressure, the Pocket Floss can shoot out a jet-stream of water, cleaning the areas between your teeth just like a floss would, but without the pain and the bleeding that can sometimes accompany flossing.

Debt prompts patients to delay treatment, data shows

IMG_6091

Does your outstanding debt cause you to avoid the medical care you need?

Though Americans certainly aren’t strangers to debt, the impact of owing money extends not just to their financial decisions, but health-related ones, as well. According to new data from lifeinsurance.org, indebted individuals often will delay medical treatment to avoid the added costs. This holds true for roughly 23% of U.S. adults with $10,000 to $25,000 of debt and 27% of those with $25,000 in debt or more.

Electronic skin can display a heartbeat on your hand

IMG_5684

You’d know someone’s health just by looking at them.

Electronic skins might not only detect health troubles in the near future, but display them for the world to see. University of Tokyo researchers have developed an e-skin that can measure vital signs like your heartbeat and display them in real time on a skin display. The design blends a breathable nanomesh electrode and stretchable wiring with an array of micro LEDs that can output basic images bending with your body. Others know right away if you need help — they’d just have to look at your hand (or anywhere else the sensor works) to get an idea of what’s wrong. The sensor can pair with a smartphone and transmit its info to the cloud, too.
