The future of the quantified self movement

You are you’re data.

In the early 2000’s consumers who fell behind on their credit card payments never thought that five years later employers would use their credit reports to determine their job worthiness. Some avid social media users must have realized that insurance companies, the IRS, law enforcement, and credit agencies would soon use their their data to investigate fraud, determine creditworthiness, and monitor other potentially illegal activity. YouTube users upload more than 100 hours of video per minute

On the internet there are only a few things bigger than Facebook, but YouTube, owned by Google, is one of them, and today the world’s top online video service marked its eight year anniversary by revealing that it is now seeing more than 100 hours of video uploaded every minute.

Good news: College enrollment is falling faster than we thought

We should want more college graduates. But we should also want fewer students at colleges with high drop-out rates.

During the Great Recession college enrollments went up.  Since 2012, college enrollment has gone down. According to the National Student Clearinghouse, Spring 2013 enrollments fell 2.3 percent from last year. The drop-off has sped up since the Fall.

Precision agriculture moves farmers into the high tech age

 A variable rate irrigation system installed to water crops saves hundreds of thousands of gallons of water.

The U.S. has seen record-setting drought in recent years. The drought has pushed everyone to look for new ways to save water. So, the The Nature Conservancy (TNC) has joined forces with America’s beer brewers to change how farmer irrigate their crops. For the non-profit, conserving America’s rivers meant growing America’s barley, one of the primary ingredients in one of our favorite cold beverages, with less water.

U.S. government student loan policy reaping $51 billion profit

At $1.1 trillion, student debt eclipses all other forms of household debt, except for home mortgages.

The U.S. government is forecast to turn a record $51 billion profit this year from student loan borrowers, a sum greater than the earnings of the nation’s most profitable companies and roughly equal to the combined net income of the four largest U.S. banks by assets.
