Can twitter go from niche to mainstream in the US?

Twitter usage had risen from 8% of US internet users in fall 2010 to 13% in May 2011, a 62.5% increase in penetration according to an annoucement by the Pew Internet & American Life Project this month. Twitter usage does seem to be growing, but is a bump like that sizeable enough to take it from niche to mainstream?

Breastaurant Phenomenon Booming in the U.S.

The very first Hooters opened its doors on April 1, 1983.

The term used to describe restaurants that feature scantily-clad women as waitresses,”breastaurants,” are poised to become one of the fastest-growing restaurant categories, according to Entrepreneur magazine. Although it is hard to tell exactly how much these restaurants gross since they are lumped into the more general casual dining category, Hooters sales now net about $1 billion annually, after increasing from the past few years.

Americans Pessimistic About Income Growth

Americans tighten belts as they are squeezed by rising prices and stagnant wages.

Consumers are being squeezed on both sides by wages that aren’t increasing and rising prices.  According to survey data by Goldman Sachs, the number of people who believe they will bring home more money one year from now is at its lowest in 25 years.

Rats are the latest pet craze in New York City.

In New York City it’s good to be a rat, where rats are the latest hot trend in pets. New Yorkers even held a rat fashion show this past weekend.  The pet rats wore couture gowns and tuxes many humans would love to wear – in their sizes, of course.  (pics and video)

Fishermen’s Hackles Become Latest Fashion Trend

Hackles — the long, skinny rooster feathers fishermen use to make lures are the latest trend in hair extensions.

Jim Bernstein, a flly shop manager,  was warned that hair stylists would come banging on his door.  But he didn’t listen.  Less than 24 hours later, a woman walked into the Eldredge Bros. Fly Shop in Maine and made a beeline toward a display of hackles — the long, skinny rooster feathers fishermen use to make lures.

Hispanics Comprise Almost Half of All People Sentenced to Federal Prison

The prison system has many more Hispanics than it did 10 years ago.

Hispanics now comprising half of all people sentenced for felony crimes in the U.S.  Programs like Operation Streamline, institute a “zero tolerance policy” for illegal border crossings where immigration crimes have skyrocketed.

A new report by the Global Commission on Drug Policy has come to the conclusion that the global war on drugs has failed. The Global Commission, which includes a group of politicians and former world leaders, says the current anti-drug policy has been fueling organized crime, costing taxpayers millions of dollars and causing thousands of deaths.
