Flaxseed might protect against death from radiation

Another benefit from flax?

Flaxseed may protect against the damaging effects of radiation, whether from a terrorist’s dirty bomb or a routine cancer treatment, a new study in mice suggests.

Mice that ate flaxseed either before or up to six weeks after receiving a large radiation dose to the chest were more likely to survive and had fewer lung problems than mice not given flaxseed. Four months after receiving radiation, up to 88 percent of mice that ate flaxseed were still alive, compared with just 40 percent of mice who did not eat flaxseed.

Researchers have been particularly interested in finding a cheap, safe supplement to give to people who have been exposed to radiation in the event of a terrorist attack…

Artificial skin spun from spider silk

Spider silk could be an ideal answer for helping heal wounds.

Researchers may have found a better alternative for providing skin grafts to wounds.  It turns out that spider silk is legendary for its strength, as well as its possible healing properties. Tissue engineer Hanna Wendt at Medical School Hannover in Germany honed in on this and found that by creating an artificial skin spun from spider silk, we could have an ideal answer for helping heal wounds.

Fossilized pregnant dinosaur may present first evidence of live birth

pregnant fossil 2345

A soon to be famous fossil.

This fossilized Polycotylus latippinus, a carnivorous marine reptile that lived 78 million years ago, contains a smaller, less developed skeleton inside of her. Scientists are therefore speculating that this creature did not lay eggs like other dinosaurs, but gave birth to live young…

Information could escape from Black Holes after all, study suggests

black hole input 2345

Do black holes NOT swallow everything?

New research by scientists at the University of York gives a fresh perspective on the physics of black holes. Black holes are objects in space that are so massive and compact they were described by Einstein as “bending” space. Conventional thinking asserts that black holes swallow everything that gets too close and that nothing can escape, but the study by Prof. Samuel Braunstein and Dr. Manas Patra suggests that information could escape from black holes after all…

New copper underwear eliminates the fungus and bacteria from your dirty ass

panty_cobre_verde_2_medium

Copper has a new form and format.

Chilean company Monarch has developed new underwear that’s made out of copper. And if that sounds uncomfortable, don’t worry! It’s totally not. Turns out copper can kill 99% of the bacteria and fungi that “naturally” develops down there…

China’s dominance of vital rare minerals challenged by find in Nebraska mine

rare minerals

Matt Joeckel displays a core sample of carbonatite rock containing niobium and rare-earth elements, which was taken from a deposit near Elk Creek, Neb.

The small Nebraska town of Elk Creek (population 112), may not be so small much longer. Reports suggest that the southeastern Nebraska town may be sitting on the world’s largest untapped deposit of “rare earth” minerals, which have proved to be indispensable to a slew of high-tech and military applications such as laser pointers, stadium lighting, electric car batteries and sophisticated missile-guidance systems.

4GB of storage on a paper clip

dataclip_final-580x310

The Data Clip

As flash memory chips continue to get smaller the main advantage is more storage in the same space. For example, the 64GB USB stick of today, will hold double or triple that in the same chip space within just a few years.

However, there is another advantage to decreasing the size of the storage chips: you can attach a decent amount of storage to tiny objects you’d usually associate with another function entirely…

NASA discovers there may be flowing water on Mars

water on mars

Dark seasonal streaks on crater walls could be flows of salty water.

We have known for a while now that ice exists on Mars.  We have seen a lot of suggestions that liquid water may have once existed on the surface in huge rivers and oceans. But  NASA has announced for the first time, they may have actually spotted some flowing, liquid water.
