These are the skills that your kids will need for the future (Hint: It’s not coding)

IMG_9474

The jobs of the future will involve humans collaborating with other humans to design work for machines, and value will shift from cognitive to social skills.

An education is supposed to prepare you for the future. Traditionally, that meant learning certain facts and skills, like when Columbus discovered America or how to do multiplication and long division. Today, curriculums have shifted to focus on a more global and digital world, like cultural history, basic computer skills, and writing code.

Yet the challenges that our kids will face will be much different from those we faced growing up and many of the things a typical student learns in school today will no longer be relevant by the time he or she graduates college. In fact, a study at the University of Oxford found that 47 percent of today’s jobs will be eliminated over the next 20 years.

This country is the first in the world to offer free public transit

IMG_9488

“There’s no doubt that we not only cover the costs, but also come out with a surplus.”

Estonia made waves in 2014 for becoming the first country to offer digital citizenship and for using blockchain technology to transform civic life.

Now the country is improving the physical experience of being a citizen by offering free public transportation.

After providing free public transportation for five years in the capital city of Tallinn, the Estonian government is ready to expand the service to the entire country, according to Pop-Up City.

Once that happens, anyone who has a “green card” can ride buses, trains, and ferries whenever and wherever — without charge.

The announcement makes Estonia the first country in the world to offer the service.

The probiotic that kills antibiotic-resistant bacteria

IMG_9442

Infection with the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus can cause many health problems, including sepsis. Certain strains of this bacterium are resistant to antibiotics, so they are particularly dangerous. However, researchers discover that a probiotic bacterium can destroy this superbug.

Researchers are now investigating the potential of a probiotic bacterium in treating MRSA infections.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is highly resistant to treatment with antibiotics.

These include oxacillin, flucloxacillin, and dicloxacillin.

Cost per like is the new cost per wear

IMG_9407

Twenty-four hours before leaving for a weekend trip to Miami, I went into a panic. I needed new swimsuits. New shorts. New tops. New sandals. I speed-shopped through H&M, Aritzia, and Zara, recklessly swiping my card, as if I were on my own version of Supermarket Sweep. I wasn’t preoccupied by where to go, what to do, what to eat and drink when I landed. The first thing on my mind was, What am I going to wear? More specifically, What am I going to wear for Instagram?

It’s become my worst habit. I shop before every trip, whether I’m going abroad for a week or just a quick weekend escape. With the exciting prospect of fun activities, new locations backdrops, and Living My Best Life #content opportunities, my inner faux-influencer comes out. As frivolous as it feels, I have a lot of fun crafting the perfect ‘gram—from the pose to the outfit.

Great green hope: The big picture on legal marijuana

IMG_9374

The biggest unclaimed territory in the consumer discretionary universe is cannabis. Even though cannabis remains illegal under federal law, Americans spent $6 billion in 2017 on legal recreational and medical marijuana.

Why it matters: Americans may have spent a total of $50 billion on recreational cannabis last year, according to the best estimates. That leaves enormous room for the legal market to grow, even if cannabis consumption remains flat.

Da Vinci Speaker Series : Technological Unemployment

When you dig into the numbers it’s clear that a sizeable fraction of domestic job lost has been lost to automation. Four major research groups are projecting unemployment rates beyond those of the Great Depression within the next decade or two, and the pace of change is on an exponential acceleration curve.

While no doubt these changes will prove momentous, there are effective policies, projects, and technologies–some available even today and some close at hand–that can get us out of this crisis and into a much brighter future for all. We at the Society of Humane Future Visionaries propose a program for creating parts of that better future right now, starting with a movement embodying the humanitarian values that will incrementally get us there. We intend to deploy the wildly successful Silicon Valley industry disruption process as applied to society itself. In the short term, we are advocating more effective distributed democratic processes and a surprisingly feasible Market-Oriented Universal Basic Income implemented within local and world-wide communities of mutual support. Our longer-term goal is to build the first of many physical cities or city-states that fully embrace these evolving values, policies, and technologies to serve as living proof to the world that they work.

Da Vinci Speaker Series: Steve Kommrusch on superintelligence and machine ethics

Steve’s talk on “Ethical Systems and Artificial Superintelligence” will be a broad overview of Nick Bostrom’s book “Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies” and how normative ethics relates to Superintelligence”. It will ask questions like: what might be the goals of an artificial intelligence that can significantly out-think its human creators? Which systems of ethics might be most stable as we build and teach artificial intelligences? How viable are Asimov’s 3 laws?

Your kids hate your smartphone addiction

IMG_9330

From CNET Magazine: It isn’t easy balancing “me time” and parenting. I talked to experts to find out how.

I can’t stay off my phone. And I’m afraid it’s hurting my 2-year-old son.

Sometimes it’s a breaking news story that draws me in, other times it’s boredom. Whatever it is, this device in my hands — which gives me access to nearly all human knowledge plus all the cat videos I could ever want — is constantly calling for my attention.

The big hack: How China used a tiny chip to infiltrate U.S. companies

IMG_9317

The attack by Chinese spies reached almost 30 U.S. companies, including Amazon and Apple, by compromising America’s technology supply chain, according to extensive interviews with government and corporate sources.

In 2015, Amazon.com Inc. began quietly evaluating a startup called Elemental Technologies, a potential acquisition to help with a major expansion of its streaming video service, known today as Amazon Prime Video. Based in Portland, Ore., Elemental made software for compressing massive video files and formatting them for different devices. Its technology had helped stream the Olympic Games online, communicate with the International Space Station, and funnel droone footage to the Central Intelligence Agency. Elemental’s national security contracts weren’t the main reason for the proposed acquisition, but they fit nicely with Amazon’s government businesses, such as the highly secure cloud that Amazon Web Services (AWS) was building for the CIA.

North, South Korea begin removing landmines along fortified border

IMG_9296

SEOUL (Reuters) – Troops from North and South Korea began removing some landmines along their heavily fortified border on Monday, the South’s defense ministry said, in a pact to reduce tension and build trust on the divided peninsula.

Project details were agreed during last month’s summit in Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea, between its leader, Kim Jong Un, and South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

In a statement, the ministry said the two sides agreed to remove all landmines in the so-called Joint Security Area (JSA) in Panmunjom within the next 20 days, with military engineers performing the hazardous task on the South Korean side.

There was no immediate confirmation from North Korea that its troops had begun the process.

Ideas on what to do with time not spent on driving

Space 10’s “Spaces on Wheels” concept project explores the future of autonomous vehicles. One of the ideas is a mobile cafe that lets you have coffee and socialize while you travel. SPACE10 & f°am Studio

If you weren’t stuck in gridlock, where might you be? And if you didn’t have to focus on driving, what else might you do? A new autonomous vehicle project by Space10—the Ikea future-forward R&D arm that brought us mealworm meatballs—and the creative agency f°am Studio are proposing answers to those questions.
