Fontus – a bottle that turns air into water as you ride your bike

fontus 1

Fontus, is a “self-filling water bottle for your bicycle.”

Do you always have to constantly stop to refill your water bottle on long bike rides. Kristof Retezár, a student at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, Austria, has come up with a new way to quench your thirst on the go. He has invented a little thing called Fontus, which he calls has invented a little thing called Fontus, which he calls a “self-filling water bottle for your bicycle..”

Air pollution is radically changing childhood in China

Four year old Wu Xiaotian has breathing problems that are linked to air pollution.

A boy in China has a chronic cough and stuffy nose that began last year at the age of 3.  When smog across northern China surged to record levels this winter his symptoms worsened. Now he needs his sinuses cleared every night with saltwater piped through a machine’s tubes.

IBM’s oxygen powered battery

IBM-Supercomputer-builds-batter

IBM has built a battery that needs oxygen to live.

In an effort to build a battery capable of powering a car for 500 miles, IBM has designed a battery that produces power by taking in oxygen and then recharges by expelling oxygen. Such a battery can be significantly smaller and lighter than traditional lithium ion batteries, providing a much longer life per square inch since it is driven by the outside air. (Video)

New device captures ambient energy from the air to power small electronic devices

Energy3

Professor Manos Tentzeris displays an inkjet-printed rectifying antenna used to convert microwave energy to DC power.

Researchers have found a way to capture and harness energy transmitted by such sources as radio and television transmitters, cell phone networks and satellite communications systems. By getting this ambient energy from the air around us, the technique could provide a new way to power networks of wireless sensors, microprocessors and communications chips.

Earth’s Upper Atmosphere Suffers Record Breaking Collapse

NASA is puzzled over the record breaking atmopheric collapse

The Earth’s upper atmosphere has had a record breaking collapse, one that has scientists both puzzled and worried, NASA announced Thursday.

The collapse occurred during a period of low solar activity known as a “solar minimum.” During a solar minimum, sunspots and solar flare activity heavily diminish. Since the date range of a solar minimum expands over a 12-month period, it can take up to 6 months to identify one.

This collapse occurred during the 2008-2009 solar minimum. While these minimums are known to cool and contract the thermosphere, this collapse was 3-times greater than low solar activity could explain…

Air Pollution Ups the Risk of Sudden Heart Attack

The dirtier the air, the more likely people are to suffer sudden heart attacks, researchers have found.  Particulate matter – tiny specks of soot, dust, and other pollutants in the air that can be breathed deep into the lungs – has been ‘consistently’ linked to increases in deaths from heart disease and clogged arteries.

PolyPlus Developing Waterproof Lithium-Air Batteries

PolyPlus Developing Waterproof Lithium-Air Batteries

A prototype battery made by PolyPlus uses lithium metal as the anode and salt water as the cathode to power an LED.

A company based in Berkeley, CA, is developing lightweight, high-energy batteries that can use the surrounding air as a cathode. PolyPlus is partnering with a manufacturing firm to develop single-use lithium metal-air batteries for the government, and it expects these batteries to be on the market within a few years. The company also has rechargeable lithium metal-air batteries in the early stages of development that could eventually power electric vehicles that can go for longer in between charges.

Unique Tree Shaped Air Conditioner

Unique Tree Shaped Air Conditioner

Breath – a tree shaped air conditioner

Breath, an air conditioner by Ryuichi Tabu, is one unique kind of air conditioner that uses ground heat and the Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES) system for its functioning. Designed in the shape of a tree, this peerless air conditioner circulates air within a wider range with a double structure that controls airflow in its branches.
