Fontus, is a “self-filling water bottle for your bicycle.”

Do you always have to constantly stop to refill your water bottle on long bike rides. Kristof Retezár, a student at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, Austria, has come up with a new way to quench your thirst on the go. He has invented a little thing called Fontus, which he calls has invented a little thing called Fontus, which he calls a “self-filling water bottle for your bicycle..”

Electric car travels over 1,100 miles without a recharge on a new aluminum-air battery

Together the Israeli company, Phinergy, and the aluminum giant, Alcoa Canada, demonstrated an electric vehicle (EV) capable of driving over 1,100 miles between charges using a combination of aluminum-air and lithium-ion storage technologies.

Air pollution is radically changing childhood in China

Four year old Wu Xiaotian has breathing problems that are linked to air pollution.

A boy in China has a chronic cough and stuffy nose that began last year at the age of 3.  When smog across northern China surged to record levels this winter his symptoms worsened. Now he needs his sinuses cleared every night with saltwater piped through a machine’s tubes.

IBM’s oxygen powered battery

IBM has built a battery that needs oxygen to live.

In an effort to build a battery capable of powering a car for 500 miles, IBM has designed a battery that produces power by taking in oxygen and then recharges by expelling oxygen. Such a battery can be significantly smaller and lighter than traditional lithium ion batteries, providing a much longer life per square inch since it is driven by the outside air. (Video)

New device captures ambient energy from the air to power small electronic devices

Professor Manos Tentzeris displays an inkjet-printed rectifying antenna used to convert microwave energy to DC power.

Researchers have found a way to capture and harness energy transmitted by such sources as radio and television transmitters, cell phone networks and satellite communications systems. By getting this ambient energy from the air around us, the technique could provide a new way to power networks of wireless sensors, microprocessors and communications chips.
