GE reveals vision of what our homes will be like in 2025

GE rolls out their vision of the future.  Sometimes we often wind up with a bunch of design concepts that have zero chance of making it to market because those design concepts are  usually designed for “the home of 2050” or some other far-off date that nobody’s really thinking about yet. With GE’s “Home 2025” design concepts, they have made it their goal to stay within the realm of possibility. (Photos and video)

Europe to Reduce Power to Vacuum Cleaners to Cut Energy Use

VacuumingCarpet

The cleanliness of Britain’s homes is being threatened by European bureaucrats.

First it was traditional light bulbs, then it was plasma televisions. Now European bureaucrats are targeting the nation’s vacuum cleaners as part of plans to cut energy use in the home.  Officials at the European Commission are proposing to restrict the power of domestic vacuum cleaners in a move which experts fear could reduce their effectiveness in sucking up dust and dirt.

Quirky Appliances for a Truly Geeked-Out Kitchen

appliances 1

Bizarre kitchen appliances to outfit your kitchen.

A part of me thinks that mainstream designers focus more on creating sleeker, streamlined appliances. The general consensus would be to appreciate their efforts, but for someone like me, who gets to view designs as quirky and bizarre as the following… another sleek toaster is like drinking flat Coke. If you enjoy the fizz and appreciate spunk, come join me fitting a hypothetical kitchen with some really quirky appliances! (Photos)

Passive Houses Have No Furnaces But Plenty Of Heat

Passive Houses Have No Furnaces But Plenty Of Heat

From the outside, there is nothing unusual about the stylish new gray and orange row houses in the Kranichstein District, with wreaths on the doors and Christmas lights twinkling through a freezing drizzle. But these houses are part of a revolution in building design: There are no drafts, no cold tile floors, no snuggling under blankets until the furnace kicks in. There is, in fact, no furnace.
