Cable TV losing record number of subscribers

Eight of the nine largest subscription-TV providers in the U.S. lost 195,700 subscribers in the April-to-June quarter.

Americans spend a lot of free time in front of the TV set and that is where the weak economy is hitting them.  Record numbers of people are canceling their cable and satellite TV subscriptions, according to an analysis by the Associated Press of the companies’ quarterly earnings reports.

That cable box that sits on top of your television and ushers in cable signals and digital recording capacity into tv has become the single largest electricity drain in many American homes.  Some typical home entertainment configurations eat more power than a new refrigerator and even some central air-conditioning systems.

Modern antennas cost $25 to $150 and can display a picture sharper than cable or satellite.

Julie and Anthony Bayerl of St. Paul, Minn., love watching prime-time shows on the sleek 50-inch television in their bedroom. They also love that they pay nothing for the programming.  The only thing they do not love is how a low-flying plane, heavy rain or just a little too much movement in the room can wipe out the picture.

Cable TV Subscriptions Drop But Cord Cutting is Not Completely to Blame

There are other factors attributing to the drop in cable tv subscriptions as well.

A new report shows that cable television companies lost 741,000 customers between July and September, representing the biggest quarterly drop ever since the media research firm SNL Kagan began compiling the statistics 30 years ago.

First Time in Modern History Number of Americans Paying for TV Falls

This is the first decline since tracking began in the early 1980s.

Television is dead. Long live television. For the first time in modern history, the number of Americans paying for television subscriptions has fallen, as a new generation of technology and the recession takes hold. Research from industry specialist SNL Kagan shows that the entire US paid television industry lost 216,000 customers in the three months to June, having gained 378,000 customers in the same period last year.

Meysam Movahedi’s latest concept certainly isn’t the first revolutionary tweak to the tried-and-true power outlet, but it’s easily one of our favorites. Put simply, the Rambler Socket is an in-wall box that contains 1.5 meters of extra cabling along with a traditional AC outlet. Granted, you’ll need a pretty deep wall to make something like this work (in theory, of course), but the result is nothing short of brilliant. If your AC cord is long enough, you simply plug it into the socket per usual; if you need a little extra length, the built-in extension cord pulls out with a gentle tug. Once you’re done, you simply tug on the cable once more and watch as it recoils back within the wall…
